Kenny Vaughan is the best partner for Marty's playing.
The only thing more notorious than Marty's playing is his hair!

Man, thats the real deal! I actually played that guitar a few times when Clarence had it. Lots of memories seeing Marty fly on it. He's a class act..
Man, these boys were smoking. Love it!!!!! JB www.johnbeland.com

Glad Clarence's Tele is in the hands of a good person, keeping that style of music alive!

Ah.... you might find only one of the silvertwins is running hence only one mike, the other one is no doubt a spare in case the first malfunctions in any way... common practice i think Scotty |

I bet he plays with both amps for a fuller live sound. The new POD X3L has several amp models that does this, its pretty cool sounding. Can anyone else comment on this ( people who run two amps at once?)

This is really cool on a couple of different levels...
First..it's a fun song to listen to and to watch. These guys are clearly having a great time and playing great music. Second, it's great to hear Clarence's guitar being played and to hear THAT tone being played with the right bender licks. Third...it's fun to break down and analyze and learn Marty's licks with the Amazing Slow Downer and then realize they are the same licks that we've heard before and know how to play...just that they are being executed really well in a band / song context. Fourth, Marty's playing not only whole note bends, but seeing Clarence's long throw in action makes you realize that it was / is just as easy to play half note bends for bluesy bender riffs.. This harder with a short throw BTW. On another level...one always wonders what if? What if Clarence were still alive? For one thing this video of Marty playing 'Clarence' wouldn't exist... Then again would it be Clarence playing this? I don't think so... If I recall...Johnny Issacs sent me a YouTube link of Marty playing this tune at a different gig and if I recall...it was basically identical... In other words Marty and band have played this song almost identically note for note night after nite...which explains why the band is so tight (besides obvious talent). But would Clarence be playing something like this? I don't think so because what we know about Clarence was that he would never play the same thing twice... He was constantly re-inventing himself and his licks every time he played. There would a zillion version of the same song that would be equally cool but unique. I also don't imagine that Clarence would have a song segment where he would trade harmony and unision licks (by rote) such as Marty and Kenny Vaughn played... That sort of regimented type showy stuff somehow doesn't fit with Clarence.. which then leads to .... Would he have fit in Nashville's strict formula of regimented playing country? hmm... What do you all think? |

My thoughts on "what if Clarence was still alive" are this. While he WAS alive he was very much working in a regimented session scene in LA, playing on records by the Monkees & Everlys, as well as the loose sessions like the Byrds, Maria Maulder etc.
That said, Clarence was a stylist, and stylists for the most part are not welcomed in Nashville's session scene. Producers do not lean towards One Trick Ponies, regardless of how amazing & influencial these stylists are. Case in point, my friend Ray Flake had an extremely difficult time getting session work ( on a steady basis) after he left Ricky Skaggs. Times were very hard for him for years after Skaggs. He was just to left field for Nashville producers. What a shame. Also, James Burton's session success was do, inpart, to the fact he was a much more dicipined, versitile player than Clarence, who could adopt to movie soundtrack work, jingles, as well as hipper sessions like Emmylou and others. But even James was limited to what he could play on those dates. Although he was one of the top session guys of the 60's and 70's, James played a very submissive role as a session player and his work never reached the constant commercial exposer as a Brent Mason. Knowing Clarence, as I did, I just couldn't see him walking inthe same shoes as Brent Mason. And Visa Versa too. Clarence would have certainly followed his own drummer. Session playing ( ona day to day basis) requires a certain creative but submissive mind set. If Brent is reading this he knows that what I am saying is true. Thats not taking a thing away from Clarence. I just believe that he woudl have passed on session work to tour and play worldwide on his own. I believe Clarence would have followed along the same path as Albert Lee and toured worldwide with a variety of bands. But I could never see him working within the strict boundries of today's Music Row record production. He just was not that kind of a player. However, Clarence was a genious player. The likes of which we may never see again. JB www.johbeland.com

Ok gang, I tried the PM route, but no joy.
What's the name of this song, please? My thoughts from the lyrics: "Countryboy Rock n Roll' "I've been a rockin, I've been a rollin" "Make a fool out of me." Can anyone help me out here? Many thanks in advance, Ward |
