esquire with only volume control

What would happen if you only had a bridge pickup and a volume knob? I'm electronically challenged. Would any capacitor be needed? At real gigs the only control I use is the volume, never touch the tone knob and 98% of the time only use the bridge pickup. I know there's the issue with losing some highs when the volume is turned down a bit, but is it possible to only have a control plate with a volume knob wired in?

How about an Esquire with no controls but the amplifier and your fingers. Or, you could use a foot switch or volume pedal/

Custom control plates are not cheap, and this alone may discourage a lot of cheapsters from doing just what you describe. If you didn't like the sound straight thru, you could add a capacitor in the signal chain but I like this the way it is. I'll convert it to a 4 way soon enough, but I like having one or more partscasters in development like this all the time.

I plan to make some minimalist control plates of stainless fairly soon.

I see it can be done! Very minimalist indeed. Surely a guy like me can add a pot, I don't want to go too crazy with the bells and whistles though! Thanks Boris,
Greg

I gigged this Esquire for a few years. I used a volume pedal. It made me think about my note choice more!

Doesn't the Avril Lavine Squier Esquire just have a volume control and no tone control?
Could you play an Esquire without either tone or volume? I'd like to know what the sound is like on it? Is that what that cool little number is with the chick on it and the large chrome strip that I can't make out is?

Why would you bother using a volume pedal can't the amp take care of that for you? Also, if you need the volume pedal then why not just have it on the guitar? Cool factor or...?

I didn't always need the volume pedal. I was able to get as direct of a connection as possible from my guitar to my amp for recording. In a live situation, the ability to control the volume durning a song was important.

The original idea for the guitar was to have one that made me focus on nothing but playing. I ended up digging the tone so much that I decided to play it live.

Would be nice to be able to select the neck pickup though...

Rhinocaster, thanks for explaining that since I'm just learning about all of this modding ca ca.
What would I have to do to have that same setup? I'd love to have no "turny things" as Nice put it. LOL. I want to get rid of the control plate and everything. Straight Esquire. That is so cool. I want your guitar Nick, can I have it. I'll send you my address for shipping. Would someone email me or put it in this thread as to what I have to do to get rid of the controls and plate. Should I follow the diagram above that Romco posted. Just follow the red wiring? I have never been so juiced to mod a guitar as I am now. You guys know freakin' everything!!

There's lots of space to hide a hidden pot inside a control cavity. Here I made a custom plate and soldered two 250K pots back to back. I found my preferred setting and left it there for a few years. Pretty easy.

You can get cool stainless chrome snap in plugs for the plate at Lowe's in the hardware and fastener bins aisle. They call them furniture plugs or something?
I just use volume and switch on both my teles, and it loks clean. Dick Dale strats had them too.

You can buy blank control plates from guitar fetish. If you have a drill press you can rout the hole for the volume pot. Or you can do what I did and just forget the knobs and stuff and you know just play quieter when you need to. Hi folks, by the way!
