how much should I expect to pay for a fret level/crown? My guitar has a dent in a fret (dropped a flashlight on it, pushing the strings into the fret stupid me) and I figure that in order to fix that, the rest of the frets must be leveled off as well. How much $$ are we talking here?

In my neck of the woods about $100 will get a crown dress and sprout dress, roll the neck edges as well if desired. About $300 for a full fret job. In your case it depends how badly that fret is dinged up. Squires have pretty soft wire IME so that fret may be a jerk out and replace ... which would cost more than the gutar did ...

the guitar with the problem is a MIA 2000 strat. I just need to set up the squier to replace it... sorry if that caused any confusion. Would a photo help to see how badly it's dinged?

I think I paid 85 dollars last summer for a level and crown. Is the "dent" so bad that it messes you up when playing?

Yes. The guitar's not within reach, but the worst dent is on the G string, 16th fret (not sure exactly about the fret #). when the string is fretted there, it fits into the groove, going a 1/2 step sharp (the string obviously hits the higher fret because it is depressed at a lower point). There are 2 other locations with visible marring of frets. All 3 of these places catch the string during bends, so annoying that I have put off playing that guitar for now.

I get John Bolin of Bolin Guitars in Boise to do my work.
SEE HIS WEBSITE www.Bolinguitars.com
Do a level for way less than $200. A whole refret isn't much more than that.
I would check around. It isn't brain surgery or rocket science.

It really depends on where you live. In my area a fret level/crown goes for about $50.

I just got the invoice for the fret levelling done on my MiM Telecaster. It was an even $100 and that includes reworking or replacing the nut as needed and of course a setup, which on a Tele is pretty simple. I supplied the strings or they would have cost extra. I've had this guy do the frets on a cheapo acoustic once and he made it play like a fine guitar so I think it's a quite reasonable charge all considered, assuming he's done an equally fine job this time. I'll find out tomorrow.
