TAB feature - proportional spacing?

I tried to post some tab today, for the first time. It was a disaster! Apparently the tab feature is proportionally spaced, not an equal-spaced font. I was not able to line up all the tab notation properly. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to do equal spacing? What about adding other tab notation, like slides, hammer-ons etc? Maybe there is a tutorial or FAQ somewhere that I have missed... ?
