Anyone play out in other bands?

Thinking and praying about doing this.
And balancing my time with worship leading.
How often in a month do you play?
What kind of music?

I play out in a classic rock/country band in addition to my work in the Gospel Quartet. We practice once per week and play out a couple of times a month. The more I play and practice the better musician I become.

The Trimmed And Burnin Blues Project just resumed rehearsls three weeks ago after taking four months off,,, we're only rehearsing once a week. I wish it were more!

This Monday night with our regular worship leader/band in her secular avocation. TracyannThomas.com. I'll have the same bender guitars as church, and certainly add a few sanctified fills.

Just got a call yesterday to do a gig in New York City in April. 10 song set with musicians from all over the country. Should be interesting!
Aside from my church lead roles, and occassional session work, I would dearly love to be in a blues/rock jam band heavily into the blues as a sideman. No time or interest in being a frontman anymore.

Just started Dance Like David. Were playing at coffee shop/bookstores, other churches, and were even going into the prisons.......

I play out with my christian rock band as well as playing at church. We have just started recording our first CD of original songs which should be done by spring time. We hope to put together a tour and play anywhere God leads us.
We have played churches as well as big christian music festivals and will continue to play as much as we can to spread the word.

It's not likely that I'll ever build a closed back cab for my amps unless someone orders one but you really ought to give one of my amps a try at Back2Blues Fest this year,,, I know you're picky,,,,

man You should try one of Shannons amps.... it has made a huge improvement in my sound... the tone is round and fat and ferocious... I can bend a low G and have it just growl and it holds together as the note plays out... I used the 59er at the last two B2B fests and loved it... my second guitarist just ordered and received a Super Burn from Shannon and he is just giddy over it. He swears that it is the best sounding amp he has ever played... funny I hear those same words coming out of my mouth whenever I play thru mine.....

Thats right man,, we ended up eating at that resturaunt up on Mt Baker,, you never did get any of my BBQ,,, it's worth the airfare just to try it! :mrgreen: No brag, just fact!! Well,,, we finally found THE drummer and a killer harp player. We all get together next Tuesday,,, I'm pretty excited about this band..

Besides doing music for Mass, I'm also in 2 bands...actually the same musicians but 2 different singers. With styles from Rock, Blues, and Country, I think we got "it" covered!

I gig on trumpet in small jazz combos locally.

Played first with three original written over the last week and rehearsed in two hours after Sunday service. Drums-bass-acoustic-benders through RI brown Vibroverb. Not as much fun as church due to the time constraints, but definitely got the right Spirit in the club and got to help the followup band with setup and the use of the 'Verb.

Cool,, there's always something though,,, like the drums. But I'm glad it went well for you. I was invited to play at a Roadhouse turned church last sunday night,, got to play my Pine fretless bass that I just finished..

Along with serving on church worship teams from time to time, I've almost always maintained a working band, duo or single situation over the last 35 years.

My latest group is a Classic Soul band called SoulShake. Myself (received Christ as my Lord and Savior) and the bassist (a Catholic) formed the group and were very up front with everyone as to what we expected, i.e., professional behavior, no excess profanity, and that we would only accept mature individuals that understand the basics of societal respect and courtesy.

In doing so, we got some excellent musicians who are fine people as well. We all have families, most of us have children and understand we wouldn't accept any other kind of behavior at our homes, and don't want it within the band either.

We play corporate sponsored events, weddings, good paying gigs, staying away from dive bars and hell-holes that are a waste of time and a vex on the soul.

So, playing out with other bands can be done, but you have to stay on your toes if you play with non-Christians. Make up your mind before getting the band together exactly what you'll accept from yourself and other band members, and stick by it.

Also, be selective in the material you play. The songs we choose for our group are fairly benign 'good-time' party songs, i.e., Soul Man, Knock On Wood, My Girl, I Feel Good, etc., and I won't play anything that has bad language or graphic imagery. My meter is this - if I can't invite my family to see my band play, I shouldn't be in that band.

Just before putting SoulShake together, I had an offer to join an already formed Stones tribute band. They had a pro studio, rehearsal hall, hot players and were doing a circuit that paid between $3-5,000 a show. I rehearsed with them once, and since I knew tons of Stones music from past club days, it clicked and I had the gig if I wanted it. I went home that night and got so convicted that it wasn't where I should be, all those hateful, violent, sexual lyrics running thru my head and realizing I couldn't play that stuff anymore and seriously call myself a Christian. So I turned them down.

I'm not advising anyone on what they can call acceptable or not, but I know as a witness to the Lord, I'm going to be very selective in what my name is associated with in any band I'm in.

I go back and forth about it, one seems to necessitate the other. Blues and rock, and especially jazz or "original" gigs, allow me to play and express more, while the worship/gospel show gigs get my reading chops sharpened. They feed each other.

I don't play in church currently, but when I did I played in 2 original rock bands. Each played no more than once a month, generally. The genres of the other bands were old school (70's/early 80's) punk rock and roll for one, roots rock/classic/Americana (think T. Petty, Neil Young, the Band, etc.) for the other.

I'm so glad to hear this, it's been something that I've felt very strongly about for years and frankly, I don't find all that many christian musicians who are on this same page. too many seem to think that the inconsistant lyric content is no big deal, and some even like to say that they are reaching out to others simply by being a christian (even when playing in a bar). I'm not saying that christians should never be in bars, but in my experience, the band is there to get people partying and drinking more. that is totally inconsistent with the gospel message that we are all called to share.

I play in a local band here (Irons In The Fire (http://www.myspace.com/ironsinthefiremusic)) and I also do weekend gigs in Morganton, GA at Morganton Music Park (which is beginning to get pretty dang monotonous cuz we play the same crap every Friday and Saturday night and it doen't allow me to "stretch" as a musician---but it gets the bills paid....).

Dance Like David (my band) is playing tonight at Downey Chapel Cafe, in Downey California (Corner of Imperial and Woodruff Ave). Admission is free. Good Coffee shop with starbuck style drinks, and some food too! Starts at 7:00pm
