BrianD January 15th, 2008, 05:43 AM especially when multiple examples are in the same thread. I'll have to find a way for them not to start to load by default, or continue wait sometimes a very long while to get my band width back , let alone reply. It's a nice feature, but a link instead of the actual vedio would seem to work
tjalla January 15th, 2008, 07:31 AM On the flip side, you may be surprised at how little extra cost broadband is over dialup :) It'll make your overall browsing/email that much more convenient.
Just a suggestion!
Cheers,
Trevor

I don't know Brian's specifics, but I think you'd be surprised how many people don't have any choice other than dial-up.
I live in a very rural area & got a higher speed connection just last year when a local wireless system was set up. Because of sight-lines & geography, it could only serve a small portion of town. Recently, we switched to a DSL connection that was just hooked up, again we are barely within the area that is served. That leaves probably 75% of homes around here with dial-up.
I should add that there IS the option of satellite internet but it starts at around $60 a month which compared to $15-$20 for dial-up, isn't a great alternative.
We don't have cable TV & don't expect it for years, if ever.
TDPRI January 15th, 2008, 08:45 AM Yes, sorry this is well known. However, greater than 96% of our users have broadband. Out of 330,000 visits last week less than 12,000 were dialup accounts.
BrianD January 15th, 2008, 07:21 PM Well sure, I'm not a newbie to computers, the internet, or telecommunications in general. Central PA had the distinction of a C-NET article about how are cable modem provider had slower speed than dial-up. There are other factors here as well that I won't bore you with. I'd love faster downloads, but over 90% of my surfing is text reading / small pictures and 53.2 is sufficient, fortunately. I didn't realize that so many members of the forum are on a broadband link, as I assume that many sites, retail especially, don't take into consideration that a page loaded with every new multi-media attention getting gizmo looks sweet - if you take the time to load it - but seriously violates the "5 second rule" usually for no other benefit than web designers impressing clients IMHO. That's not the case here, but if it was my site ( which of course I know it isn't ) simple and fast would be the default over colorful and flashy as a matter of principal if not practicality. I would have explained my internet connection options in the original post, but I was on my mini-keyboard and if my left pinkie finger brushes one of the left most keys, the message posts before I can stop it. Not complaining about that now, mind you :)
JimiBryant January 15th, 2008, 07:37 PM dial-up!??
c'mon, Borat, join the 21st century already!
sorry just teasin' I actually do feel yr pain my friend.
sometimes I think my ISP (which is AT&T) is powered by a hamster running in a little wheel, it's so pokey.. and I "supposedly" have DSL!!
TDPRI January 15th, 2008, 09:08 PM Certainly the OP realizes that websites are created for the majority of users not the lowest minority. When the majority was on dialup this website catered to them, not the few on broadband. The same is true now, only in reverse in this case.
I can remember the first website I designed for a graphical browser... there were 2% of the users complaining about a lack of support for text only browsers (Lynx).
Kid Muddy January 16th, 2008, 11:40 AM Brian, just use Firefox and block the YouTube vids. That's what I do since I can only connect at 24K.

24k! Ouch!
I suggest you get DSL the moment it becomes viable, the day I changed from 56k to DSL was orgasmic!

I don't think cable will be an option either and it's a no-go for wireless too, since there's no cell coverage at all in this area. Ah, life in the sticks.

Thanks for the info! I see the positive feedback on using Firefox, and I'll probably change over to it myself very soon.
