2ndstringer

A friend came over last night with a fairly new Chinese-made Epiphone goldtop LP with P-90's. It sounds and plays great, except that it buzzes like a son of a gun, and when you touch the strings, the buzz does not change in any way. I checked the control cavity, and the ground wire is soldered to the pot ok, so I am guessing that it isn't making a connection to the bridge. The wire disappears down a hole that probably leads to the lower insert for the stop tailpiece. On a tele it is easy to fix this, but I am wondering if on an LP you have to remove the threaded insert to get to the wire connection. Has anyone done this?
Thanks,
John
