My friend is looking to start bass, and i'm helping him look for a cheap decent one. The Squier P and J basses are a semi-obvious choice, but he's shown some interest in StingRays. Any good StingRay copies to look for?

Obvious choice OLP (a cheaper and licensed version of the StingRay) seem to be pretty OK, I hear.

The OLP's seem to get the 'paly a few until you find one where they got it right and buy that one - kind of review. If you're going cheap the OLP would be a real good bet. If hee can stretch - the Tribute L2000 is a very good, very flexible instrument that can do a better than passable Sting Ray imitation. I've had 2 and oddly enough - the newer one is the better ... Generally under $400 in a gig bag on the used market
