I'd be curious to know if someone has both amps and could let me know if there is a big difference in volume between both amps.
HotRods usually only go up to 4 and then just get dirtier, not louder. They are also not very efficient 40W amps compared to e.g. my Boogie or a Marshall through the same cabinets.
I would imagine that the HotRod DLX 3/4 up is probably not much if any louder than a Deluxe Reverb 3/4 up.
Thanks

where's our mathematicians? 40 tube watts is in reality only gonna be a little louder than 22 watts...no where close to double. you don't even need a comparison, there's a formula for this.
the hot rod is definitely voiced to get a little more gain anyway, so i bet the amount of clean volume you can get out of them is very close...

I know the math behind it, but that really only applies in an ideal situation where you are comparing equal components. Like I said, I know the HotRod Dlx to be a very inefficient 40 Watt amp.

Every amp is different...as in not models...but each individual amp. It's my experience and from listening to people and reading that the DRRI is a much more reliable amp than the Hot Rod. I've seen lots of the Hot Rods just quit on stage in addition to reading about that happening.
My DRRI is used, five years old, nothing's been replaced and it's not quit on me once. I'm a very big believer in the reliability of this amp.
The wattage/volume difference isn't much. I'd rather have a good 15 watt tube amp over the Hot Rod. I think the Hot Rod sounds good on clean and cranked...but I think of it like a person. If I can't trust him then I'm not gonna rely on him.

Having owned both amps in the past I can say without a doubt the HRD has more perceived clean volume than the DR. I like the tone of the DR better although and you could always mike the DR if necessary. The HRD allows you to crank in the mids which affects the perceived volume of the amp. I like both amps but the HRD has complaints of relialibity issues. Talk to an amp tech who works at a repair shop and they will tell you what amps they see the most of. Good luck on your choice.

A few DBs will surprise you.
Still, like you mentioned, headroom is probably going to be the most noticeable difference between the two... not so much as overall volume.
Headroom is when on the dial it breaks up. They will both seem equally loud to you as your ears will be pummeled either way, but to the guy in the back row, he'll notice a bigger difference than us guitar players will.
With amps, its all about application. Where and how do you plan to use these amps? This will define what your needs and their differences will be.
