I saw a bass player about 20 years ago, touring with James Taylor! Later, I spotted him playing on a Phil Collins video! He was thin, with thin long grey hair with small round glasses. Looked like a hippie college professor! He is the best, and most layed-back bass player I have EVER heard!!! Any ideas on who this guy is?
Thanks!

Is Leland Sklar. He is a studio bassist with an impressive reputation. I can't say enough... I suggest you Google that name. You'll be amazed!

Didn't Lee often play along with drummer Russ Kunkel? Gawd, did they cook!

That's him! When I saw him play with James Taylor, around 1985, he was amazing! He seemed to play effortlessly. It was worth the price of admission just to watch him play!!! I did google him, and you are right! Amazing career!
Thanks,
Tony

The first eric johnson concert I went to was at a small hall. When his band hit the stage the bass player and the keyboard player had synths. They ran thru their patches and the bass player walked back to the riser, locked eyes with the drummer and they didn't move all night. I have never heard two guys play so tight. Never even got their names.

Impressive indeed.
I've read many interviews with him over the years. I'm not sure what he plays now but for a long time he had a P-bass partscaster that most notably had reverse stagger of the split P/U. He moved the treble-side of the P/U farther away from the bridge in relation to the bass-side to even up the tone & swore by that set-up.
I decided to try it on the doug-fir Tele bass I'm nearly finished with. I've never tried it but you can't argue with success.

I hear him play with the Section (with Danny Kortchmar, Craig Doerge, and Russ Kunkel) on a 1973 concert with Mahavishnu. These guys almost Mahavisnued Mahavishnu. I was very impressed with their musicianship that they could so ably mimic another band's style.
One thing I remember. He took a bass solo, then got some squeaky squanky sounds while fretting with his left hand and pretending (I hope) to pick his nose with his right hand.
It wasn't my cup of tea, but the musicianship was very high with these guys, Kortchmar included.
