I've gotten the bug to start recording. I'd do it on garageband. I want to do songs with full instrumentation. Doing live drums sounds like a lot of work/expense for just starting out, so I'd use Garageband's drums. I'll need to mic the vocals and acoustic guitar. I have a Tonelab LE that I will use direct for electric guitar. For bass, I'm kindof hoping that Garageband's amp sims are usable.
It is also worth mentioning that I have one of those cheap ART tube preamps, which I could use as a mic preamp if need be.
One pertinent issue is: how does the quality of the 1/8" audio in on my computer compare to the quality of a USB or Firewire interface?
There are a few units I'm looking at...
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/PreSonus-INSPIRE-1394-FireWire-Audio-Interface?sku=241483V (Presonus Inspire 1394)
This one is Firewire and is cheap.
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Tascam-US144-USB2.0-4X4-Audio-Midi-Computer-Interface?sku=242193 (Tascam US-144)
This one is a USB interface, but it has an SPDIF input, which might be good to have as my Tonelab LE has an SPDIF output. It doesn't seem to have phantom power, though, so I'd need to use my ART tube pre or get another preamp for mics.
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/MAudio-MXL-990991-and-Audio-Buddy-Package?sku=703626 (M-Audio buddy)
This one is a package with a little preamp and two mics for a hundred bucks. It's not really a computer interface of any sort, though, so I"d need to plug it into that 1/8" input or get another interface to go with it:roll: (which would mean I'd probably be better off just getting one of the other two interfaces and mics separately).
What do you guys think? Also feel free to chime in with other good/better options in a similar price range. Thanks.
