Simple Guitar Tracks

I am looking for a way to do some simple guitar tracks...maybe a better way to put it is simple guitar tracks over some simply constucted patterns...without just downloading backing tracks, what is out there to do this?

I have a drum machine, bass, & guitars...but I am looking for something that sounds "real" that doesn't require all the programming.

I do not have anything in the way of computer recording set-up currently. I do have an old Roland VS840 which has been collecting dust for some time.

Think cheap and easy!

Sotware will do this for you but to do it cheaply and easily could be a bit of a challenge.

There are two common ways of dealing with backing tracks depending on the recording application and additional software it might come with or software you buy seperately to compliment the recoding application.

LOOPS
Pre-recorded performance segments that can be arranged inside your recording app to your liking. Say for instance a typical cd of drum loops would be broken down into certain musical styles. There would be typical rythm beats like 4/4 with ride or 16 beat with hi hat. It would also include typical drum rolls and infills etc. So it become a matter of taking these snippets and arranging them how you want. Loops work really well if your dealing with drums.

You could have bass loops, guitar loops, pretty much any instrument you can think of. Much the same as drums you arrange these snippets to your liking and depending on your recording program you can alter tempo without changing pitch, and/or change pitch of the root note of the progression. The problem with these types of loops is they are limiting. You can't alter progression.

Loops are easy to deal with.

MIDI and VIRTUAL INSTRUMENTS
This is more complex but more flexible. Here you are dealing with virtual instruments and a sequenced track that will trigger an actual audio sample of the real instrument on a note for note basis. This is more flexible because you can physical compose any progressions you like but it is more complex and time consuming.

You can import pre-sequenced midi tracks that are much the same as loops except you have the abiltiy to change whatever you like on a note for note basis.

LOOPS would be the way to go if your on a budget and want simplicity but it is best to have a recording application that can time stretch a loop without affecting pitch and one that allows you to change the root note of the progression.
