kdangler November 1st, 2007, 11:24 PM I got Tele bass GAS bad! Anyone have any experience with the 51RI or the Sting 53 Precision? I think the Sting bass is made in Japan which I think is a plus over the MIM models, but truthfully I have never played a MIM Fender bass. I have 2 CIJ Teles and think the world of them. I play contemporary P&W and have a RIC 4003 which I love but I want a bass that THUNDERS!!! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Tim Armstrong November 1st, 2007, 11:57 PM I could be wrong, but I think the '51 P-Bass is made in Japan, too. I dig them EXTREMELY!!! Most of the ones I've tried were nice and light, too.
Here's yet another option: the pink paisely Tele Bass. Yum!!!
Cheers, Tim

Jupp. it is. My 51 P was CIJ, and I only have great things to say about that bass!
Vince a November 2nd, 2007, 01:54 PM Played a Sting P about three weeks for about ten songs of fun (instead of my JB) . . .
Played it on the treble side . . . sounded great, light, easy to play!
Was impressed . . .

Haven't had the pleasure of playing a sting, but you won't go wrong with the 51 RI.
broadcaster November 2nd, 2007, 03:51 PM Both made in Japan. The Sting bass has contouring in it's two color 'burst body whereas the 51 has a slab body and comes in two color choices. The Sting also has the infamous 12th fret inlay.
RevMike November 2nd, 2007, 05:00 PM My 51 P is MIJ. When I bought it, I was blown away. Had a pro setup and was even more blown away. Its the most comfortable, nice sounding, beautiful bass I've ever played. Its the last electric bass I'll ever buy. I love it. The Stings appear to be nice too, but I have this thing about having someone elses name scrawled on my instrument....even if I like the artist.
kdangler November 2nd, 2007, 05:57 PM Well, as much as I love Fender MIJ and CIJ instruments, I couldn't justify the $650+ price tag for the 51 or the Sting (I don't care for his name on my bass either) every time I get GAS. But whilst perusing 'talkbass' forum I came across the name Jay Turser. I had never heard of them but they make a Sting-like bass (with contours) for $130 brand spankin' new! I went to Harmony-Central user reviews and it got a 9.9 out of 10! So, I pulled the trigger because even if it's not the greatest bass I already have a great bass in my RIC 4003 Fireglo. BUT, every review I have read has been positive. Anyone have any experience with Jay Turser instruments (made in in China)? I went with the sunburst.

My 51RI was the best bass. Thomastic Infelds Jazz Flats and bridge / pup covers added.
OH MY, wish I hadn't sold it...DANG!
Tom P. November 4th, 2007, 11:16 PM Have you considered a Dirnt?
Nicer features than the RI's IMHO, better pickup solid bridge, body contour.

Modeled after the ’51 Precision, it features a slab ash body with a ’55 arm contour and pickguard. Other features include a thick C-shaped maple neck modeled after Dirnt’s original ’69 Precision, a Custom Shop ’59 Precision Bass pickup, and a Badass® Bass II™ bridge with chrome hardware.

Dennis_UK November 7th, 2007, 04:44 PM Tom P, the bridge is only more adjustable. It has no other benefit. A strings-thru-body bridge doesnt need mass, for instance - it has the whole body clamped to it! A BAII or ordinary P-bass bridge is always being torn from the body. A STB style bridge is clamped to it instead.
I've owned both models, and they are both amazing, although I tend to prefer the 51RIs because they have, on the whole, slightly less chunky necks, and I have small hands. A 51RI alternates with a MIM Standard as my main gigging bass.

Dennis, I agree completely. The bridge is only more adjustable and eliminates any intonation issues.
