i have an old 70 watt Yamaha Powered mixer thats been lying around and I was gonna give it to my buddy ho could use it.

not sure what ohm speakers it needs. on the back it says under the 2 1/4" outputs:
1 and 2 :8--16ohm
1 or 2: 4--8ohm

It sounds like it is a mono desk with a minimum impedance of 4 ohms, which is pretty standard. There is some stuff that will take 2 ohm loads, but you're running very close to the wind running there - clipping/overheating/distortion in a PA and/or overloading is a minor short or intermittent fault away.

So what it's saying is if you use one speaker input only, the load should be 4 ohms or 8 ohms. If using both which are connected parallel, use 8 ohms speakers minimum for 4 ohms total.

Using higher ohmage speakers would be OK, but I bet the volume falls right out as 70 watts ain't much. You'd then risk overheating it by pushing volumes too far.

I'd recommend changing the electros in it - they go in these too, and the results are just as bad as a tube amp.
