gwr August 23rd, 2007, 08:18 PM For what you play the guy's are right, try an mxr dynacomp, look for an older model (70's) because the newer one's are a little harsh and set it up around 2:00 and 11:00 for the best ratio and put it first in your pedal chain.
Jeffscreamedcorn August 23rd, 2007, 08:19 PM The one you leave at home! I never use one live - a bit in post production in the studio.

for more transparent Keeley Comp
Arlo August 23rd, 2007, 08:41 PM dbx 163a works great for me.
I have a dynacomp too nice lil unit.
KC August 23rd, 2007, 09:02 PM had an old, old dynacomp for a long time, lately I've been using the little silver Marshall which they call Edward the Compressor, run off a wall wart this seems to have tons of boost & a smoother knee than the dynacomp. works better for me.
telerocker5150 August 23rd, 2007, 09:09 PM either dyna comp, or if you wanna pay the extra money, a keeley 2 knob.
Big Tony August 24th, 2007, 02:35 AM You don't have to file for bankruptsy to get a good compressor. This is a good stomp box. I paid 22,90 Euros (that's ~$21). I believe it's a Boss CS-3 replica.

Home Grown Tele August 24th, 2007, 05:37 PM Maxon CP-101 is a pretty good compressor and REALLY transparent. They are much less expensive than a lot of the boutique/vintage compressors and a good deal for the $.
Digam11 August 24th, 2007, 06:02 PM I`m looking to gat a Janglebox but just not in the cards right now. Heard great things about them.
J-Twang August 24th, 2007, 06:41 PM I've had great luck with a DOD Milkbox
Grin'n'pick August 24th, 2007, 11:59 PM I was thinking 'why has nobody mentioned AnalogMan???' but then I checked the prices and they're a little over your budget. The two knob small box comp costs $190, but I bet there's not much to choose between that and the Keeley (if you're getting the Keeley, btw, get the two knob). The REAL fun starts with the BiComps, because you're getting two of the best compressors ever made for the guitar in one box. All the styles you play would be covered, and then some. IMHO don't bother with getting on the long waiting list for the big box one with attack controls unless you swap between, say, Les Pauls and Teles a LOT, just go with the Mini BiComp, it is a stunning pedal with a Ross Comp and a Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer in one small footprint (you can have one or the other activated, or both on together!). I'm afraid it is $245 but you get what you pay for.

I would be surprised if you regretted shelling out the extra few bucks, I rarely switch mine off, it has paid for itself several times over, and not to dis the Keeley (which IS a great pedal) but the MiniBiComp displaced the Keeley on my board.
Good luck with whatever you decide to go with, and have fun finding it!

yes but i do beleive in preferrin quality with price. if your lookin for a good tone, dont get like a behringer or dod. just get like a dyna comp or cs-3.not too high priced, but still quality sounding pedals.
eugenedunn August 25th, 2007, 09:34 PM I've had great luck with the Barber Tonepress. I leave it on all the time and use the blend feature to dial in more of the original untreated signal. I don't use it so much to get that spongy squashed tone.... I use it to more to get single note definition and jangle up my rhythm chord work. I set up a more subtle tone, but this pedal can get a good squashed tone if you want.....
I think there's other compressors that do the "effect" thing better, but the Tonepress is a great tone treatment for your overall playing tone in all sorts of situations.... I think it's really a help with other pedals on your board too.
AlFo August 26th, 2007, 09:29 PM Haven't tried the Behringer but I love the CS-3. I love the extra clicky sound with a strat or tele using neck pick up. Would a Dyna comp give me more of that?
As for behringer stomp boxes I have been extremely pleased with them. I just wish they put the darn power input at the front and not the side.
