I own a CS3 and consider it satisfactory.... I hear so much about the CS2 being "the sh**". What are the differences?? sound wise... and can one sound like the other?
inform me please as I have never had the chance to try a cs2 and i am curious....
BTW music being played is straight up country.....

CS-3 has 4 knobs and is newer. The knobs are "level", "attack", "tone" and "sustain". CS-2 has 3 knobs, I beleive it looses the "tone". Been a while since I played with either, but my recollection was that both were ok. I don't think there is any big circuit change, but I don't know for sure.
I'm thinking that if you have tried a CS-3 and it works for you, don't worry about it or think through it a whole lot more. There are a bunch of compressors out there if you want to do a bunch of research, but I wouldn't worry if it is considered "the bomb" or not.

I'm not sure if I could detect between a CS-2 and a CS-3, but I'm very sure I can sniff out a CS-1. Something real different about 'em. I like mine for chicken-picken' style stuff, but I'm not real pleased with it for the heavier rhythm style stuff I've been doing. Thinking about taking it out of the BCB-60 and putting it back into the BCB-30 with just the DM-2 and a TU-2, replacing it with a CS-3 (making a "rock" pedal case, and a "country" pedal case.)

I can detect a difference but I wouldn't say one is necessarily better than the other. I think the CS-2 is more subtle, I'm loathed to say transparent because neither is. That said I like the tone they both impart, very country. As has been said if you like the CS-3 there is no reason to think the CS-2 will be any better for you and in the end the differences are slight. You have more control with the CS-3. Besides, people like Vince Gill seemed to be able to eke out 'slightly passable' sounds with them!

where does the tone control need to be placed to have a CS2 quality??

about 12:00. Don't forget I had my amp set up with the treble on 6 or 7 and the bass on 3. As you roll back the gain (level) you should also hear some treble cut. I think the CS3 may be more transparent than the CS2 (which isn't saying a whole lot), but you definitely have to keep the gain down and roll off the highs with the tone control to get it to sound anywhere like the CS2.

the cs2 sounds more natural, compared with the cs3, which alters the sound a little bit. for me, i canīt describe it any better, it sounds like the tone of the guitar is a little bit squeezed from the cs3. and that increases, when the sustain level is turned up.
take care everybody
