little projest that i want to do - i want to build a mute switch for my sabine rack tuner that i can incorporate into my custom pedal board - i want to hard wire the stomp switch to the board itself to a quater inch jack out put to the tuner footswitch input - my question is how to wire the switch for just turning on/off the mute to the 1/4 jack- or is just that simple--2 wires? the switch i want to use would be that kind on standard marshall amp switchers. thanks

You don't want to wire it to the tuner input...that would just kill the input signal to the tuner or if split between the tuner and the board degrade your signal

You would want to wire a footswitch to bypass the board and go direct to the tuner (w/ no output from the tuner to the amp) or if you run through the tuner all the time wire the switch so it will mute the output of the tuner by shorting tip to sleeve (ground to positive) of the cable that's plugged into the output of your tuner.

Clear as mud?

the tuner is constantly on as it is inline with my effects rack chain --- i just want to build me a mute stitch so i dont have to walk back to the rack to press mute to tune in silence - there is a footswitch input to plug into for muting - i just dont think $30 for the actual pedal is worth it when i can just build my own:idea:

Wow...
So that at least clears it up; you have a Sabine tuner with an input for a footswitch (for muting) and you want to build a footswitch for it.

I agree that $30 probably isn't worth it for the footswitch but if you have to ask how to wire something that simple (footswitch to 1/4" plug) you might be better off just buying something like this  :
Footswitch (http://www.amazon.com/Johnson-Mono-Footswitch-Works-Makes/dp/B000EO6OKM)

There's also a microscopic chance that the Sabine tuner uses a momentary footswitch (instead of a latching) but my guess is that any old latching On/OFF footswitch would work just fine. You could test it out by inserting one end of a guitar cable and shorting the other end (tip to sleeve). If it switches and stays switched you need a momentary switch...if it only mutes it temporarilly when the cable is shorted you need a latching ON/OFF.

If you've got the cable, a 1/4" mono plug, a soldering iron and solder, and a footswitch go for it! Otherwise you could easily spend as much as that Johnson footswitch buying all the parts.
