What should I buy?

I got my first tele a few weeks ago but I don't have an amp. I really want a tube amp but I am on a tight budget. So I saw the epiphone valve jr. combo amp for $150 and thought that would be acceptable. I also saw that I could buy the valve jr. head and cabinet for $260. Whould it be worth it to go the extra mile and buy the head and cabinet or to just get the combo?

Or...... I could buy my friends squire pack amp for $20

I have the head and a 1-12" Lopo cabinet with a Jensen speaker.
I love it.

I would buy the larger speaker cabinet because the sound is better and you have more possibilities some day with the seperate head and bottom.

There are amps in the $150-$250 range that will give you a lot more tones like a Vox AD15VT.

AD15VT (http://elderly.com/new_instruments/items/AD15VT.htm)

The Epi is pure and warm and simple. I love playing straight into it and I love parking my pedal board in front of it.

What kind of music will you be playing? At what volume??

I play a lot of blues and rock but I am not in a band so I just play on low volumes in my room.

I have the EV Jr. head with an open-backed 1 x 12 EarCandy cabinet & a Celestion G12H30 speaker.
It can run the gauntlet from bedroom practice amp to gigging amp in small venues.

Just an FYI.....you can buy a closed back or open back empty LOPO cab http://www.lopoline.com/home.html for about $125. My Jensen speaker was $35 from www.tubedepot.com.

There are lots of speaker choices if you buy the head.

Do you mainly enjoy a nice clean sound or do you want to be able to tweak a bunch of tones?

If you want a straight forward warm tube tone (maybe you can through a pedal or two in front of it some day, then buy the Epi).

If you want to be able to dial 50 different crazy tones just to jam along with CD's and amuse yourself, the VOX would be a lot more bang for the buck.

Both are fine choices.

What do you see yourself doing with the amp? What do you want to play at night?

Thanks for the advice guys I think I will get an epiphone valve jr. head and then get a cab to go with it. I don't want to have to buy a bigger amp in the future so I will try and get one now.

I'm probably too late:rolleyes:
I wish I had seen this sooner:rolleyes:
The best, most productive advice I could give You is to go with a G-Dec from Fender because with that in your arsenal not only will You have the time of Your life - You'll play constantly and improve Your abilities in leaps and bounds.
Before I was tuned onto the G-Dec I'm absolutely CERTAIN I would have insisted that You buy a Champ because it was always the one basic Amp that nobody EVER outgrows.
The G-Dec changed everything.
It's a new day.
Why just play the same stuff when Your musical intellect can be so easily and painlessly expanded.
This is the one Tool that EVERYONE deserves to own.
