How do you pack big combo's ?

I am selling my old Standel combo amp that has to weigh 70 pounds +.

I did a search on here and came up with bupckus so here's the question .


How do ya'll normally pack and ship big , heavy combo amps ?

I am worried that just bubble wrap and a big box won't cut it . The amp is solid state so no tube worries there . I've just never shipped something this big and heavy before .
Also what shipper do you use ? Will they pack ?

any info would be great !

I sold (and shipped) a 4x10 blues DeVille about a year ago. I just went to the UPS store and had the dude estimate what it would cost and how to pack it and mail it to somewhere far away. Then I used that as the shipping price. I did cut out a piece of strong cardboard and put it over the grille. And I wrapped the tubes in biubble wrap and stuffed them in the back of the cab (doesn't apply to you). I think he put the thing in a big plastic bag, and put it in a heavy box with packing peanuts. I let them do it, so I'm not really sure.

In these ebay days, I bet the guys @ your local packing store will have advice. Maybe even the post office (not where I live, though)...

At least 4 rows of bubble pack wrapped around each direction (heighth and length-wise), extra cardboard in front of speaker, amp in box upside down (chassis/head bottom of box). You can optionally place that box inside another box (recommended) and pad as necessary for snug fit. I've never had a problem with an amp packed this way, except I recently had an amp that had been dropped on its side hard enough to pull one chassis screw out of the cab under the tweed covering. Fedex is paying for it. There were no punctures to the box.

+1 for the UPS store and double boxing. Have shipped 3 or 4 amps through them with their packing and have never had a problem. If the buyer has a problem with the extra packing fees, just explain that it's cheaper than having to ship the thing back if it arrives in pieces.
