Platefire August 13th, 2007, 01:09 AM VFT=Vintage Fender Tone. Just finished an Allen Accomplist Kit with 1-12" cab with Ememance Patriot Texas Heat Speaker. As an old 59 year old player thats played on a few vintage fenders in my life, this amp has got the Vintage Fender Blackface/Silverface era tone nailed. Tone is good as owning one of the originals. The master volume is like pure classic tone adjusted wide open but when you roll back the MV and turn up the "raw" control you begin to dial in gain/distortion at about any level you need. Not as a Metal amp Gain but blues/rock tones Levels. The clean sound is so amazing if you love vintage Fender clean tone that my jaw is dropped. I'll get around to the crunch stuff later. Me, my tele and strat have got a silly grin that will take a while to wipe off. Platefire
JohnnyCrash August 13th, 2007, 05:31 AM I've got Allen transformers in my 6L6 BF Princeton build.
I think he has Heyboer makes his trannies, but I tell you what, a BF Fender circuit with Allen transformers... I know exactly what you're talking about.
Perfect BF Fender sounds. Cleans so good that a Rock and Roller like me was stunned. I play more Clean these days than I ever have. Deep complex character with warm, chime, sparkle, and musicality. I love playing Stones stuff on it in Open G - sounds like a big mean Keith piano.
Califiddler August 13th, 2007, 10:10 AM I have had my eye on the Allen amps for a while. I would probably go for the Encore if I got one. The problem is not being able to hear one before buying one. At those prices I just can't pull the trigger without hearing one first.
GatorBait August 13th, 2007, 10:34 AM Congrats Platefire! I built a V-18 a few months ago, so know exactly what you mean! ;-)
Enjoy!!
PS - Califiddler, the Encore kits are on sale this month at Allen Amps! Where in CA are you? I'm in the Sacramento area if you want to hear my V-18.
Wayne Alexander August 13th, 2007, 12:10 PM Califiddler, where are you? I've got a 2x10 Encore, which lives in West LA where I am. If you're close enough, come try mine. (I'm not planning to sell it). It's a great amp. If you want blackface tone with options to get dirtier than stock, you cannot find a better amp.
tombm3 August 18th, 2007, 06:22 PM I have also built the V-18. I was my first build and is my favorite. I'm looking at the encore also. However I was thinking about the 2 x 10 configuration. Therefore I don't need to make the jump this month.
I would recommend David's amps to anyone looking for a vintage style amp. I know I'm preaching to the choir since there are a lot of us that have built his kits.
stantheman August 19th, 2007, 11:54 AM They're super nice products.
I'd love to get the chance to play through one again.
There are a couple of Guys out there doing amazing stuff.
We live in a great time period for Tube Amplifiers!!!
I can never remember having so many outstanding options to choose from.
Just a few years ago I remember thinking Tube Amplifiers were an endangered species.
All Is Well!!!!!
Califiddler August 19th, 2007, 12:38 PM GatorBait & Wayne Alexander -
Thanks for the offers, much appreciated! I'm in the Bay Area, so a run up to Sacto to see Gator would be doable. Wayne, I'm coming to L.A. in October for a wedding in Malibu, so maybe we could arrange something. I know West L.A. pretty well, having lived there for 7 years - where are you?
shakedancer August 20th, 2007, 08:56 AM I've been interested in getting an Allen amp for a long time. Bought a 1x12 cab from him. The clean sounds you and Johnny describe is what I love. Could I expect that same classic clean tones from a Sweet Spot? I don't use Tremolo much but I would like to have it.
Wayne Alexander August 20th, 2007, 11:24 AM Califiddler, I live in Beverlywood, over near Century City, south of Beverly Hills. When your visit gets closer let me know and we'll see whether we can get together then.
stevieboy August 20th, 2007, 04:30 PM One nice thing about the Accomplice and other Allens is the extras he designs in, like the RAW control, the master volume, and the tone control on the reverb, so you've got the Fender BF thing but can stretch it out to some different places.
I have an Accomplice with a 15 inch speaker, a Big Ben. Only amp I use, except for my SF Champ, and for my tastes no need for pedals, plenty of tube overdrive available at any volume.
Maybe we can do a little Socal Allen Ampfest for Califiddler--and I'd like to try some other models too--the Old Flame is the only other one I've heard much.
Platefire August 23rd, 2007, 06:45 PM I've just discovered a Clean Fat Tele Sound that is very responsive at low volumes that actually sounds like a tweed amp. Can you imagine a blackface able to change cloths into a tweed outfit.
Vol=1, Treb=4, Bass=10, Mid=10, Raw=10, Reverb=to taste, MV=10
teletard August 24th, 2007, 02:52 AM hello wayne. my name is patrick and i would love to hear your amp. i am in west hollywood and have lusted after allen amps for a while. i am not sure what your schedule is but if that offer is for me as well i would take you up on it.
