Yet another effects order post

Ok... so I've gone from my "minimalist effects" stance, since I'm actually playing "for real", doing rock/cover tunes and need more than what I just care for. Not to mention, I've added Marshall Amps to my array (DSL-50, DSL-401.)

I've taken my DM-2, CS-1, and TU-2, and added some more pedals to the mix. I've purchased a BCB-60 to hold/power all my pedals. Since I've added the Marshalls, I've not felt I've needed the Seymour Duncan SFX-01 Pickup Booster like I did with the Blues Junior so that's now out of the mix.

So, what I ended up with as my order is as follows (all Boss, loosely ordered using recommendations in the article on effects order from Boss):

Guitar (of course) into a TU-2 Tuner.
Next the NS-2 Noise Supressor.

Then here is where some contention occurs... I was going to use the send/return of the Noise Supressor for the following:

AW-3 Auto-Wah, CS-1 Compressor Sustainer, FZ-5 Fuzz, and DM-2 Analog Delay.

Then, the out of the Noise Supressor into the Marshall.

But, I when I over think it, I start to think that some stuff should be put in line with the effects loop on the amp. Which, is most likely over-thinking (or maybe not.)

What would you do differently with this configuration, and why?

TIA!
Tim

Hi Tim,

I think it depends on how quick and easy you want to set up your rig for each gig. I have found that having a no hassle pedalboard hookup greatly reduces the technological snafus you run into during gigs. The only things that seem to really do well in an onboard combo amp effects loop are reverb and delay effects..... and if you decide to do that you have to run another power source for your pedals plugged into the loop by your amp.

So, to keep things simple, chain all your stuff in the best sounding order before your amp. I assume your amp has reverb, so I think if you did something similar to:

Guitar - Tuner - Compressor - Fuzz - Auto Wah - Delay - Suppressor - Amp

A lot of people have differing opinions of whether the compressor should be before the Distortion or not. A lot of people also differ on whether to put a Wah type device before or after the distortion devices.... try it both ways.

I think you definitely should have your delay effects last in the chain and followed by reverb. My two bits....

Oh I forgot to mention, Tim:

I recommend using George L's self-made cable systems for chaining all your pedals together. Great high end response and they can be custom cut to minimize the clutter on your board. Plus, they come in straight and right-angle plug-ends. Eric Johnson uses 'em..... many other endorsers. i have used them for 20 years or so...

Thanks for the tip on the cable system, as well as the ordering.

I'm liking the fuzz less the more I play with it. It might just be going back, and a chorus picked up.

I'm going to ditch the idea of using the FX loop. Just seems like too much hassle.

I'm planning on spending some time this morning playing with the order this morning as I've got practice this evening. We'll see if what I come up with is sonicly pleasing to the band-mates.
