The mojo of EC's Twin

Ritchie Fliegler explains Eric Clapton's Tweed Twin:

RF: ...Clapton’s
amp was modified, like that means better than the way it was.
That thing was a mess. The transformer set is like from a
1978 Super Twin, with two CTS speakers out of a 100 watt
Bassman – a '73-74 type of thing. That was it. That’s
Clapton’s amp. Clapton loves that amp. It’s one of those
things that you’ll hear, “Hey,
Clapton’s amp was modified.”I
guarantee you that if someone
came to me and said, “Hey man,
I want you to modify my amp,”
and I say, “Great, I’ll put in this
1978 Super Twin transformer set
and two speakers from this 100
watt silverface Bassman,”that’s
not what they’re talking about.
They want the full snake oil
treatment. So when he wanted a spare for it because he
absolutely loved the sound of that amp, we made him another
one exactly like it. We found a used Super Twin and we took
the transformer set out of it. We bought a 100-watt Bassman
for $50 from someone who was about to throw it in the
garbage. We cleaned the caps up and threw it in there and he
said, “Yeah, that’s it – that’s great!”and we would all kind of
laugh and send it on its merry way.

TQR: I was told by somebody that particular ampli-
fier was a mid '50s Twin which had two rectifier
tubes and two 6L6’s, and the two rectifier tubes
were taken out of the socketry wiring and four
6L6’s were put in.

RF: That certainly sounds legit. I’ll buy that, but I don’t remem-
ber.

Two rectifier sockets? That sounds like an old 5E8 tweed Twin. Dropping a '78 tranny set with no modifications other than that and speakers? I don't buy it.

At the least diode rectification would be required, as well as cathode bias modified to fixed bias - if - it was an even earlier Twin circuit (say a 5D8)... JBL SF Bassman speakers? That may be actually an improvement.

Even so, Clapton's guitar sounds during this time are nothing to write home about, in my opinion. Clean, boring, and bland - the metamorphosis into a yawning BB King sound.

I thought I read John Suhr built Clapton's tweed twin amps ?...Personally, I love this tone with the signature strat (lace sensor version was best) and tweed twin

What "mojo"? Clapper's tone isn't that great.

Pass.

If you read the Amp Doctor Cesar Diaz He mention that he was the one to change out the output transformers and take out the rectifiers.

remember, Clapper has a contract w/ Fender now.
I wouldn't believe a word of it...just trying to sell more amps?

Break out the old Marshall, Eric!

I seriously doubt he is going to that any time soon.

I thought I was the only one here with that sentiment.

Makes me feel less of a "weird-o."

Yes, Clapton needs to get that Les Paul and Bluesbreaker Marshall again (the SG and Cream stuff was terrible sounding as well - to me). His playing was awesome then too... ever since, I've not enjoyed his tone or his actual playing.

I'm not sure I like his modern overdriven tone which sometimes seems puny to me. Not keen on some of his 70's strat-quack tones either, but I like his Cream era sounds.

I'd agree that his current tone is boring; but I do really like his Layla (and anything before that) tone.

I love the Layla album since I first "discovered" it as a kid and I love Eric, but I later found out that most of my favourite playing on it was brother Duane's parts!

I love the Just One Night album too - it appears my favourite stuff on it is Albert Lee!! lol

Still, I love Eric playing and some of his tones over the years.

Well in the Tone quest interview I have 09/01 Tom Dowd who engineer the Layla Session said that Clapton had a Tweed Champ and Princeton.

On 461 Ocean Blvd Clapton Start using Music Man HD 130 heads and 4x12 combo. That's what Albert Lee Said in April 2000 Tone Quest interview.
