I want to mic my amp for recording (and eventually gigging) and am looking for the right clamp/mount. What are you using?
Regular boom mic stand, or something that clamps to the handle?

For live gigs, we just loop the cable though the amp's handle and dangle the SM 57 down in front of the speaker. For recording, we use a boom stand or a short tabletop-style stand.

The dangling mic from the handle is fairly usual outside the studio, where it'll be a variety of stands.
If this is home use, you can simply set the mic on a stool or chair, to get different placements.

Which puts the mic 90 degrees off axis and brings rise to phase problems. I know people do this all the time, but a short boom or a Z-Bar is cheap and takes up little space. If you still insist on running a mic with the cable through the handle, get a Sennheiser E609. They're about the same price as a 57.

My brother can be a little set in his ways, and he's "always done it this way with no problems".

I purchased a 2'' piece of flat iron (not real thick at all but sturdy) and bent it so that it fits snugly over my amp. The part in the front kicks out and has a slot cut for a mic clip. before puting the mic clip on I sprayed it with some rubber coating. It works great and it's very durable. the mic stays in place even if you tilt your amp back. It also frees up space that would be used by a mic stand.
It just took a little hammer and vice work to get the bents at a close 90 degrees.
