What 12" speakers are you guys running in your Princeton Reverbs?

I've got an old 12" Eminence (no lable, but that's what a tech told me) in my '70 PR. I'm not in love with it. It's a little "hard" sounding to me if that makes sense.

I'd like to find something a little warmer and smoother... maybe something that sounds compressed a bit and can sound good played low or wide open.

Anyway, I was just wondering what some of you guys are running and how you like it or maybe some different speakers you've been through and opinions.

Try A Emminence Cannibis Rex. A lot of princeton/deluxe guys use this. No coloration, lets the amp tone shine through without adding or subtracting anything. A really great speaker without spending big $$$

Not the cheapest, but I'm using a reconed vintage Jensen P12N in mine. I must say it sounds incredibly good. I'm going to try a JBL D120F next, whenever I get the energy to do so. I bought another baffle board to mount it on so I can do the switcheroo easily. Yay Crusty!

Weber 12F150.

Mine had a 12" peavey black widow in it when I bought it and I didn't like the tone plus it weighed a ton. I took that out anf put in a Fender labeled Eminence but been thinking about switching to a Weber 12A125 or Eminence Cannibis Rex or maybe a Swamp Thang.

I salvaged a blue Jensen P12QL out of an old tube stereo console. It sounded really nice when I put it in there.

Last time I fired the amp up it didn't sound very good, and I wondered if the speaker was messing up. But I haven't got around to tracking down the problem yet....

I also have a Jensen P12N reissue in a 78 PR. Very nice sound, and quite efficient. I have used the amp on many live gigs, plenty of volume. I would however be interested to know if any one has tried a new Jensen Neo in a Princeton, or a Celestion Century neo.

i used 2 bf princeton reverbs for about 10 years, one with a jbl e120 and the other with a celestion greenback. god only knows why i stopped. i think i've chased that tone ever since.

The problem with the Princeton reverb is the small cab. Even with a 12, it still sounds small and boxy with not a lot of low end. A DR just sounds bigger and I think it's because of the bigger cabinet.

The 12 (Weber 12F150) made my PR sound a lot bigger and louder than it did with the 10 (Weber 10F150), so it was a definite improvement. But still........

I just built a 1x12" open backed cab with a Jensen Neo 12-100 in it. Not done building my BF Princeton Reverb with 6L6
s but have tried the speaker in a variety of other amps.

I also have a Jensen P15N AlNiCo 15" open back I built...

The AlNiCo 15" is killer, but the Neo 12" isn't far behind. Can't tell if it's the neo vs AlNiCo or the size difference. I was expecting harsher highs given the opinions on Neo speakers in general, but they were pretty mellow while not being muffled or lacking.

As far as the Eminence SwampThang, if the Tonkerlite is thick and "mellow" on the top end, the SwampThang might be overkill thick with muffled/muted treble.


Here's both of my neodymium speaker cabs. The Jensen Neo 12-100 is on the left, the Eminence Tonkerlite is on the right. Yes, those are T-Shirt speaker grills - I spent $6 building those cabs out of solid 3/4" pine... I wanted to keep things cheap:

I've got one of Weber's P12N's in my '62 Prince.

Eminence Red White and Blue was suggested to me by Dave Allen when I ordered his Sweet Spot, a derivative of the Princeton.

I have a Weber 12F150 in mine as well. It sounds fantastic.

A couple of months ago, I played my PR through a fairly large extension cab with a Celestion Alinico Blue and wow. That speaker was so articulate and efficient that I was happy to spec one into my newest amp, a 5E3.

My PR otherwise has a 10" Jensen which leaves me out of this conversation. Our webmaster has a PR with a 12" baffle board and says it eliminated amp GAS for him. That says a lot.

I've got a Greenback in mine.

Ah man, thats the speaker... how could we forget the Blue?!

If you can afford it, you wont be sorry... get the Celestion AlNiCo Blue.

Had one with a Weber California C12CA in there, with paper dustcap. Huge souding and loud as heck, like a mini Twin, in fact, tonewise, sounded just like my Twin, only not as deep. Very late breakup. Dfinately gig worthy.
