....for cleaning built up grime, sweat, spilled beer, layers of guitar polish and basically just crud off a guitar and restoring the nice shine???
I've heard spit, ewww.
I've heard lighter fluid, this one makes me nervous.
Any other ideas?

i'd try hot water first.
Then, maybe, try a 5 to 1 mix of water/rubbing alcohol. (I assume no responsibility for this one, of course.)

I believe in his book Dan Erlewine recommends Naptha which is lighter fluid.

Dan uses naptha, breath and sometimes spit.
You can watch him do that on his repair videos/dvd. If you don't have his dvd's, do like I did and rent them from smartflix.
Well worth it.
