J. Hayes May 9th, 2007, 03:33 PM I actually made one once as I didn't have the cash to buy a Scruggs/Keith type banjo tuner as that was about the only thing available then (Late sixties). What I used was a single arm cast aluminum water faucet handle. it had a screw on the short end to tighten it on the faucet shaft. I put a bolt through it and a hole I'd drilled in the headstock (Mosrite Guitar) and rested the string in the slot of the screw on the short end of the handle. I'd then tune the low D note first with the handle away from the string and then turn it to a right angle with the string so that the string was resting in the slot. If it was sharp you'd just have to screw it in a little or out if it was sharp for the E note. I got the idea from a friend of mine who played 5 string banjo and had a pair of "D-tuners" on his banjo which worked the same way by pushing the string sideways with a pair of "levers". It was primitive I guess but it worked.........JH in Va. riggergreg May 9th, 2007, 04:25 PM I actually made one once as I didn't have the cash to buy a Scruggs/Keith type banjo tuner as that was about the only thing available then (Late sixties).
