Treble Bleed Undone

I feel as though I neutered my Affinity Tele (with SD 52 pups) after snipping out the treble bleed cap...it seems a lot more tame when turning down its volume, at least at home. I'll get a chance to give it a real run at a gig next week. It still seems nice & snappy but more under control (I still really like the bite from 500k pots). Are most Tele players with single coils happier without this bleeder cap?

Well, I experienced the same thing, but would word it completely different - from being too thin and icepicky, too brash, it went to fuller, warmer, mellower - which I like better...

I love my 0.0047 cap. Right now, I'm putting together a 5-position switch to switch in/out caps of 4 different values. The 5th position will be for no cap.

The first and only mod ever done on my '71, per instruction in Guitar Player by none other than Joe Walsh.

I've not missed it, and it sounded much more "alive" with the pot timed. Added bonus, the slight back-off on the volume knob made it tastefully subdued.

Move the wire that goes to the tone pot from the outside lug of the volume pot to the inside lug.

That's exactly what I did to mine - maybe that's why I'm really happy with removing that treble bleed cap?

What exactly does this do? Won't it bring back the "thin" sound when reducing volume?

Try putting the cap back on it along with a 100k ohm resistor. For me, that keeps the bite but it seems to help retain some warmth and lowend, too. Bright but not thin.

^^^^^ It should be pointed out that this can be done either in series or in parallel -- parallel is supposed to also change your volume pot's taper, though; some people like it, some don't. Wiring the cap & resistor in series retains the same taper while giving you the same effect. I tried fezz parka's mod on my Partscaster, but I'm still assessing how it works for me. I like the theory behind it, though, especially since I can never seem to get 100K - 130K resistors locally.

I'm w/JPK. Add a resister in parallel to help keep things warm but clean as you turn down. I've used Lindy Fralin's cap+resister values in Strats, Teles, Jaguars, Mosrite clones, Jerry Jones, Silvertones, Gretsches, you name it...

It changes the way the pots load down the pickups, like the 50's mod for Les Pauls. It's actually much more natural and fuller sounding when you roll the volume off than with the cap/resistor thang, which to me hypes the high mids the more you roll the volume back.

Would the "Fezz parka" mod work for a tele with a neck humbucker? No reason it wouldn't, right?

Thanks Fezz Parka !

I'll try removing one side of the bleed. & try the mod to the center lug of the volume pot see what's up

easy to change, either way

I just clipped my bleed out, never been happier! Not sure what people are talkin about sayin it gets dark or muddy when rolled down, sounds perfectly natural to me. Maybe just a hair of presence loss. Course I do use an AC30 CC2 which is a bright amp. Also I dial in my tone to sound just right with the volume at about 2/3rds up or less, then when I roll up I get extra edge, presence and grit. Me likey!

That "hair of presence loss" could sometimes be very annoying and very much unwanted. It , of course, hugely depends on amp/pickups ( darker, brighter..) , playing style (pick,fingers...), etc. I, for example like to use the treble bleed (but other values than the common and thin 0.001 - this one gets things bad) - by having treble bleed it is possible to get pretty glassy clear tone if desired . To get it more darker - there is a tone pot for that :-)

I got a Nocaster with a neck humbucker. The humbucker was the best, sing and sustain for days but the bridge pup was just unusable. (Ice pick city). I clipped out the treble bleed cap and the bridge pup was fine but the humbucker was just muddy. (I couldn't tell the difference compared to any single coil neck pup in my other teles.) I did the "fezz parka" mod and the humbucker has a little more life to it but still nothing like with the treble bleed cap. I may try another treble bleed cap with a resistor in parallell one of these days.

yesterday , I tried once more the Fezz Parka/ G 50s wiring (http://www.lilypix.com/photos/data/71ad16ad2c4d81f348082ff6c4b20768/2344_p39557.jpg) and I cannot say why I didnt like it last time, its GREAT and natural, comparing to treble bleed cap thing . Probably won´t go back from this anymore :-)
