Speaker response time and crossovers

I'm turning my attention to speakers. I'm planning on building a 5E3 and would like to try some new things with the combo cab. I'm wondering if combining different sized speakers has produced good results for anyone? The most important thing for me is fast response time--I like to hear the pick, hammers and pulls, and sliding on the frets. Now that I've gone all tube in my amp and effects chain, I find that these elements give a lot of life to my playing.

So, my next consideration is speakers. Do small speakers reproduce such transient sounds better than large speakers? Also, does anyone think that a cross-over network might be worth exploring?

You may want to look at ceramic instead of alnico, they tend to give a faster response in regards to attack.

Alnico - "like throwing a tennis ball off a brick wall"
Ceramic - "like throwing a golf ball off a brick wall"
