vintage to modern, YIKES

Ok, I have my 63 (custom shop)tele which came with instructions on how to switch from the vintage 63 to the modern tele wire setup on a 3 way switch...
All I can say is I don't like the sound now.
In the vintage mode, The first position was worthless, muffled and quiet. The second position was to die for dreamy & dripping tone neck. and the third was all out twang bridge.
Now that the mod is in, Yes, I can control all 3 positions with my tone, and they are all ok... but it has picked up a ringing on my open d in all positions and it seems that I lost my to die for position in what was middle and should now be first position.
I know how to solder, and know its exactly as the fender schematic said to do it. I may just switch it back and be happy with the middle and bridge positions.
Anyone else run into this?

Did you use the 1 meg pot/s and .022 cap that came with it? If so - go back to the 250K pots and .047. Also recommend you use a .001mf treble bleed cap. The 1M pot will make it shriller and reduce a lot of the warmth of the OV pickups, the .022 cap is a modern value that also does not suit IMO.

The treble bleed is not absolutely necessary, and some people prefer a .002 or even larger, but it just helps keep some highs when you crack the volume knob back a touch for rythym.

I left the original pots in it, I just did the change that they had on the schematic and used the supplied cap that came with it for the change.
I have already returned it to the stock layout, and will prob leave it that way for a while...
I didn't want to mess with this one much, and two changes in as many days has me a little timid. Its still brand new.

Go back to the 'new' post '66 wiring but with the .047 cap. Your 1 & 3 positions are now identical to the 2 & 3 of the vintage scheme, and you have the parallel in-phase on posi two.
