I apologize if this has already been requested and thank you beforehand for any help but it's for a good cause.

My girlfriend(soon to be fiance') and I are going to record a version of this song for a valentines day radio show featuring songs submitted by various couples. They said to send in the original and/or your own version and we're going to give it a whirl. My lady has a great old-school country style voice and I'm not too bad on a good day so it could be great.

The song is: TEXAS RANGER MAN

and it's on Sir Doug and the Texas Tornadoes album "Texas Rock for Country Rollers".

Long Live Doug Sahm!!

I dig that song! get out the phase shifter on kill on that one..

If nobody responds, I'll gladly figure up the chords for you...there aren't any major single note parts IIRC.

Cool...If nobody else chimes in I'd appreciate any help you can give me Getbent! That song's one of my favorites of all-time and it was part of the deal clencher when my girl suddenly said it was "our song" without even knowing how I felt about it. Sappy I know, but that's me.

I worked out an attempt at it using barre chords, and with the phaser or something similar I knew I could get close but I would like to be as accurate as I can to honor good old Doug.

Cheers!

awwright my brotha.... I've got some work to do, but when I get settled tonight I'll work it up... I listened to just now and it does have that whacky slide single note part and a couple of fun chords in there as well....

it will be a cool one for me to learn as well!

You're a saint among men Brother Bent! The crazy bends during the solo/bridge part you speak of is the most intimidating but exciting part of the guitar work in the song to me.

On a side-note there was an '80s's punk band from Dallas called the Loco Gringos that popularized the song (locally at least) with their proto-grunge take on it. Saw 'em do it a a reunion show recently and it made me smile quite large. The first time I heard the Sahm original I nearly fell over.

What kinda music do you like to play?

Well I'm all fired up about learning this 'un and I think I'm off to a good start. Haven't actually heard the song in a couple of weeks but so far I "think" the basic progession is as follows.

Key of "G".

Verse: G B F C F C

Chorus: G F

Now I know I'm probably missing some of the subtleties and that's where I need some help. And maybe a little guidance on the crazy, bending solo part. I've got my way of doing it but it could be better.

Okay Amigo, here is the first part: it is in A..

I'll have the lyrics and the melody tabbed in a bit.... I've decided my band is gonna do this tune!

Texas Ranger Man

rhythm part

Verses: 3X + Melody
A-C#m-G-Bm-F#-G-D

Chorus:
A-G-A-G-A-E

Melody
A-C#m-G-Bm-F#-G-D

oh yeah, well I'm an old hippie redneck... I love Sir Doug and I love country and all that that implies... I do dig that a punk band would remake the tune... it is a good'un.

Melody Solo significantly wiggle notes especially near the end (you are competing with a mean steeler who also has his phaser set to bournoulli)

Lyrics

She was a little honey pisces met at a place called seven seas
look in her eyes said "I wanna go home with you"
she was electric and I was stoned sho' didn't want to spend the night alone
But her father was a texas ranger man
I had a reputation in the town loved all the girls from miles around
knew he wadn't gonna take too hot to me

Chorus
Texas Ranger Man I love your daughter
Texas Ranger Man I want to make love to her
under the texas moonlight tonight aaaaaahhhh ahhhhhh

Set in my place full of chiggers and fleas
it'll bring you to your knees
you know how it is in texas in the summertime
so we strolled on out to the barn sure didn't mean this girl no harm
pretty soon we was floatin' in ecstasy
Somethin' appeared over me, the biggest man I ever did see
He said, "Son, what have you got to say?"

Chorus

interlude/melody

I've got six kids and a call that's due
Nobody even brings us the news
Little girl is sitting right next to me
Papa comes around about supper time
To drink a whole lot of beer and wine
He said, "Son, I'm glad your smart and stayed here with me

Chorus

This is close enough to play in a honky tonk... if you haven't bought Texas rock for country rollers.... ya'oughtta!

Have fun and send my regards to those who dig this song!

Thanks a lot GB! I truly appreciate it, and I'd love to hear your bands version of the song.

If I weren't so tired I'd stay up and learn that baby. Still time to strum a little I guess. My girl and I have listened to it about 10 times in the last couple of days.

Oh yeah, and I do have that album on CD. It gets better and better to me...I'm a bit obessed.

And by the way you've got some beautiful guitars. One day... One day!!

Hey GB, I've been working on the chords and they are a major improvement over what I was trying.

For some reason I want to throw in an additional chord between the G and Bm though, and I'm actually just going back to the C#m there. I think it might be due to my switching to your much more accurate version of the song but I'm not sure...haven't listened since relearning.

I've messed around with the solo part a little and it's off to a good start.

Thanks again!

twangpunk,
I linked the song above... I don't think ol'Doug would care if you want to adapt the song and I sure can't guarantee what I put down is right... Besides, If it sounds good to you and you like it... who's to know!

Man! I think I've taken a time-release idiot pill or something lately. I forgot you even put that Bm in there and was just substituting the other chord as a place keeper I guess.

I'm sure Doug could care less about someone taking liberties with his stuff but I want to be reverent.

Thanks!

Cool. I was just bangin on it and I think the progression I put above is correct... the melody part is with a slide (I think) and may have been done in an open tuning... (probably A)

Ha ha! we played this song today (hooky from work to work the Hollister bike rally) the biker crowd dug it... winery gigs are a gas.... (yes, winery and bikers in the same sentence) Two guys went up to the singer afterward and said, "hey, I remember that song!" and he shrugged and pointed at me and said, "that's the dumb@ss that made us learn it."

I'm counting that as praise, yes?
