I just watched (straight)through the Masters of the strat. To me he couldn't find the essence of anything with his playing on that video. The clips of other tapes of his where somewhat interesting (though I had seen some of them). But still, I don't think it was a very good DVD at all.
I have watched a bunch of Arlen's Hot Licks videos in the past, and enjoyed and learned something from all of them. I still really enjoy the Masters of the Tele book+CD I have.
I hear he played the '54 strat for a long time before finding a '53 tele, and all that. But I think he had terrible tone and the licks were loosely played (and, perhaps, chosen too). I don't think his heart was in it.
Have you seen it, what do you think of it?
(PS I'll be trying Roth's "150+ ACOUSTIC HOT LICKS" next. )
