I'll be getting my warmoth tele neck soon (1-piece maple fatback neck, unfinished) and wondered how I would go about finishing it so it looks worn in. I don't want to do the regular tinted finish thing. Just want to get some nice wear spots on it (slight discoloring, etc.), but don't want it to look fake.
The rest of the guitar already looks old even though it's all new. The nickel hardware has been aged slightly, pickguard screws rusted a little, neck pickup and vintage bridge have been aged as well, and the pickguard has been worn in appropriately. And the finished was a hand applied black milk paint followed up with Tru-Oil, 0000 steel wool and a combination of paste wax and gunstock oil wax.
The neck is just going to look brand spankin' new on it and I didn't know of any finishes that might age a little quicker or show wear quicker, while not looking like the standard orangey, vintage tint that I'm so used to seeing.
I'm thinking of using danish oil so that it soaks into the wood and seals, that way the surface of the wood will still feel bare, and can still get a little dirt and life into it. Then I'll just play the crap out of it and give it some authentic wear.
Any other advice?
