My grandfater is bout 91 years old, in a nursing home...hes doing alright currently no real issues...I imagine hes gonna be around for awhile longer. BUT hes not going to live forever...and when my grandmother died when I was bout 16, my aunt wanted me to play guitar with her at my G'mothers funeral service in church. I was only given 3 days to learn the song(I dont even remember the name of it, this was about 18 years ago)...I didnt know much about chords then, just barre cords...and I floundered and choked, my aunt carried me through it and I faked it...everybody still praised me as if they didnt even notice. Ive picked up playing guitar again after several years of slacking and now Ive got a better knowledge of chords and such...but now Im curious what song(s) I can learn for his service so Im not looking like a loser this time.

A little bit of history, my grandfather had one of the original Gibson hollow bodies without the lower cutaway...I almost never saw him play this, and it was often said that he had to be pretty drunk to play it and that he normally sang Irish drinking songs(yeah, we are Irish/Catholic) and usually for special occassions...once again, I almost never heard him play.

I dont really know who, in my family, that I should ask, without sounding insensitive and feeling akward. I asked my dad and he suggested a couple of unusual songs, that I almost immediately shot down...and I told him I wanted to do something that wasnt unlike what my grandfather might have played at such an occassion...so then he suggested "Danny Boy"...which I find to be too cliche and also another Irish drinking song...and not necisarrily appropriate. Im under the impression Irish drinking songs arent appropriate for a (Catholic)church enviornment...but I like the idea of it being an Irish type folk song...I just dont know........

...any suggestions???? Im really stumpted

BTW I asked an uncle on my otherside of the family(not related to this grandfather)...and his suggestion was "People Get Ready", that it was a "negro spirital" and that hed be proud if Id play it at his funneral should the time ever come and I was able. But my grandfather is Irish and not African-American...and Im back where I started, scratching my head trying to figure out an appropriate song...which is hard because I havent heard too many Irish folk songs.

HELP!!!

People Get Ready is a great song.

I've played But I Wish You Jesus at a couple of Funerals.

I would forget the Irish theme and ask God what he would want.

btw I was also raised Irish Catholic.

Pick up Brian Houston's "Jesus And Justice" disc and learn his version of the classic gospel song "Precious Lord" (which flows very nicely with an interjected excerpt of "Amazing Grace" as you'd see). While not an "Irish song", you couldn't tell from this rendering, and we've done Brian's version at several funerals.

If you don't know who Brian Houston is, well, he's a cross between Van Morrison, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen rolled into the body of a boy from Belfast. It's tough to find his stuff here in the US, but you can order discs online at www.goldusa.com, or from his website www.brianhouston.com (I believe he has mp3 samples there). He straddles the line between "worship musician" and "inspired singer/songwriter" and his discs tend to lean heavy in one direction or the other, but I've yet to be disappointed with any of them.

even though I'm Catholic, I loved learning and playing "I'll Fly Away"...just a good ol'fashioned protestant gospel song.
What I would also suggest is going to Oregon Catholic Press, and ordering the music of "Parable". We sing it a Mass from time to time. My wife and I even sang it at my mother in law's funeral who was "Bapticostal" when she was still living... Anyway, the lyrics are taken from the Book of Ecclesiastes.

A great song which sounds great instrumentally if done right... I've done this one before and picked up the instrumental arangement from Martin Simpson.

Great Song

hmmm Danny Boy is too cliche... okay....

what about "What a Friend we have in Jesus" not exactly part of the catholic liturgy but, it could be beautiful. I'd really reconsider on Danny Boy... as a catholic (although not irish except on st. paddie's day) I've been to some memorial services where the men break into it and it is genuinely moving.... cliche and tradition kinda are different ways of looking at the same thing.

A song everyone knows the title for but not the song is "When Irish Eyes are Smiling" that might be a great send off.... sing it with love and earnestness and it won't much matter... you could sing "the boys are back in town" and it would be beautiful.

one last thought... "Full Force Gale" from Van Morrison is a beautiful, peppy, and uplifting song.

Thank you...you really made me think about it differently.

there is a great bluegrass tune call "family on both sides" i've played before. also, "sheltered in the arms of God" is a really appropriate funeral song. i played this at my mother-in-law's service. e-mail me if you want the lyrics/charts. i may even be able to send the song for the bluegrass tune.
