Everybody will get snot slinging kamode huggin drunk first off as I'll have a big ass Irish wake. Music, let me see, Fat Man in the Bathtub, Willin, Ghost Rider cause of my hog, Long Black Veil sung by my o'lady using her G37 I bought her and I'll be buried with my favorite blade and my pitbull. Whether he likes it or not. Probably not though if he don't like it. And last but not least as they are at my gravesite all hung over and puking and stuff my daughter will play Amazing Grace on her sax. Oh yea buried face down so everyone mo fo can kiss my ass! But probably my o'lady will just save the dough and have me burned. thanks

Mostly there are three pieces of music at the funeral services I attended, so I choose three...

"When I'm Dead And Buried Don't You Weep After Me", by Joan Baez. Now to find that song... it was on her first LP and I didn't find a cd-version yet.

Then a part of the Requiem by Tomas Luis Da Victoria; some of the purest music ever written.

And lastly "My Generation" by the Who.

I don't have to worry about a funeral, wake, or anything like that..... I am 32 years old and the world is going to end (as we know it) in 2012 so I most likely will be going out in a blaze of brimstone and fire as the world riots with my Springfield .45 in one hand, my Colt Trooper Mark III .357 Mag in the other, and my 12 gauge over my shoulder.

now it the world does not end then I will have The Chicken Dance, Achy Breaky Heart, The Machirana, The Electric Slide, and any other cheesy hokey songs I can think of. also, The get together will be more of a get together at the beach with bar-b-que, watermelon, and the works.

"Party Fears Two" by the Associates [ Mr. Bill MacKenzie (r.i.p.) and Alan Rankine ]

And that big ol' Russian funeral dirge those guys always play at State funerals.

Hey, my heart will be free. But everybody else needs to suffer for 5 minutes, no? :^)
Save the Jazz Funerals for the next guy. I don't want no *=*=*=*=* tourists that never knew me finding an excuse to dance on my dime. Can you imagine some fool dancing at your funeral that never heard of you and could not possibly know who you are? How outrageous is that?

Little Wing - SRV version; Jimi's lyrics about his mother wouldn't really fit my death.

my grandmother passed away this spring, and she requested polka (her favorite) to be playing at the wake. really turned what was going to be a dreaded day into a celebration of her life...

i just hope when i go, a few of my friends are around who can play, and they can play whatever they want...

if i was choosing one song, give me pat martino and gil goldstein doing "we'll be together again."

Tear Stained Eye by Son Volt. I've known from the first time I heard it that I wanted this played at my funeral.

Walking down Main Street
Getting to know the concrete
Looking for a purpose from a neon sign
I would meet you anywhere the western sun meets the air
We'll hit the road, never looking behind
Can you deny, there's nothing greater
Nothing more than the traveling hands of time?
Sainte Genevieve can hold back the water
But saints don't bother with a tear stained eye
Seeing traces of the scars that came before
Hitting the pavement still asking for more
When the hours don't move along,
Worn-out wood and familiar songs
To hear your voice is not enough
It's more than a shame
Can you deny, there's nothing greater
Nothing more than the traveling hands of time?
Sainte Genevieve can hold back the water
But saints don't bother with a tear stained eye
Like the man said, rode hard and put away wet
Throw away the bad news, and put it to rest
If learning is living, and the truth is a state of mind
You'll find it's better at the end of the line.
Can you deny, there's nothing greater
Nothing more than the traveling hands of time?
Sainte Genevieve can hold back the water
But saints don't bother with a tear stained eye.

My father in laws best friend has a daughter who killed herself. He played amazing grace on slide at the funeral. They said it made a sad event even more heartwrenching. I want the opposite. I want them to play some Earth wind and fire and get your their dance on, drink some Knob Creek and smoke some fat cheap cigars. my whole life i have enjoyed making people smile, why should that change in death.

Something with some minor 7th chords?

Not something I've thought about. I do have a revocable trust, pour over will and durable power of attorney where instructions are to spend as little as possible to get rid of what remains and have a party for those who remain.

Having lost a parent at an early age I have to say ya'll should consider the getting a revocable trust, pour over will and durable power of attorney done if you'll be leaving anybody or anything behind.

i have actually thought about this a lot!
and i have a bit of a list...

*"in my life" (the johnny cash version)

*"satisfied mind" (the jeff buckley version)

*"i shall be released" (the joe cocker version)

*"keep me in your heart" by warren zevon

*"wish you were here" by pink floyd

*of COURSE "free bird" by skynyrd

*"lay your burden down" by ben harper and gov't mule

*"a song for you" (the carpenters version)

It's kind of weird that this would be the only post from this guy, and it was two-and-a-half years ago. Do you think he...? Naaah. That would be entirely too coincidental. Wouldn't it?

For me, the memorial would start with "Your Long Journey" from the Krauss/Plant album, and it would end with "That's Life" by Sinatra.

"Contrary To Ordinary", written by Billy Jim Baker and performed by Jerry Jeff Walker.
I've been doing this tune for many, many years. I strive to live up to the lyrics.

I never live my life through other people's eyes
I guess I've always been the one they said was
Too tall, too late, too early (too loud!)
Yeah, he's the one
You ought to be in the circus
You're having too much fun

Just a one-man band, a one man gypsy circus
Finding out each piece of the puzzle has a purpose
Drifting and dreaming
Yeah, that must be my fate
Always grinning down the devil's throat
Blazing with aces and eights

And I was contrary to ordinary
Even as a child
Fast freights made me wonder
The full moon still drives me wild
And stories do come true
You just got to live your life in episodes
With one eye on a lady
And one eye still on that open road

And when I die don't put no tombstone on my grave
Just have my friends throw a great big party
Toss my ashes out across the waves
Don't bring no preacher man down
Just to tighten up my past
Just tell 'em how I like to live
I like to make sing and dance and laugh

And I was contrary to ordinary
Even as a child
Fast freights made me wonder
Full moons still drive me wild
And stories do come true
If you live your life in episodes
With one eye on a lady
And one eye on that open road

My choices are:

1. The End - The Doors (maybe without f*** words, but it's ideal for a funeral i think)

but I think Epitaph- King Crimson would be the best for my funeral. And even I would like to write it's lyrics onto tombstone!

First I want a really dark-humoured British comedian, such as Jimmy Carr or Frankie Boyle, to come up on stage and do a comedy routine taking the proverbial Michael out of me and my death.

After that I want a really, really bored looking man, wearing one of those ridiculous 'fruit basket' hats with a party hat perched haphazardly on top of it, to come up on stage and, still looking really bored, play Pachelbel's Canon on a digital keyboard with the sound set to 'Bird Tweet'. Oh, and with the right hand playing in D major and the left in F minor, with the two hands about 1/32 of a beat out of sync with each-other, to make it REALLY annoying.

Finally, I want 'Three Little Birds' by Bob Marley to be played and for a projector to come up and display this image:

http://newrivervoice.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/hang_in_there.jpg

Oh, and on the projector underneath the image would be, in big, bold letters, '(By the way, the guy who wrote this song is dead too. Just thought you should know.)'

...What? Stop looking at me like that! I'm a dark-humoured smartarse who would want his friends and family to get some humour out of his death instead of grieving because I know that if I could defy all logic and see my own funeral I would rather see everyone either shocked and offended or laughing than sad. It's my nature.

My best friend's father always said he wanted the Star Trek theme played at his funeral. He passed away in 2004 and of course it was played. It was so funny but so sad.

I'd like to have When I Get Where I'm Going played.

I'm not entirely sure I believe it, but I'm sorta liking "Blake's View" by m. ward these days:
Death is just a door, Blake said it first
It's just another room we enter, it's a threshold that hurts
Birth is just a chorus, death is just a verse
In the great song of spring that the mockingbirds sing
We come and we go, a-weeping and a-wailing
Our heads in the hands of the nurse
Well, put your head on my shoulder, baby, tell me where it hurts
You say you lost your one and only, could it get any worse?
I said, "Death is just a door, you'll be reunited on the other side"

Whatever " I cam see clearly now the rain is gone" is called. Is it bright sunshiny day?
And, Time to say goodbye, the little opera number. It's what I play at the end of gigs sometimes to get people to leave. That's how I'd want it used too. To kinda push people to the doors. " That's enough mourning, now move along."

Can't pick a single song. At my funeral I would request that all of my friends and the folks that I play with regularly all get together, throw an all day shindig, play every song that they know, roast a fat pig or have a fish fry, eat, and then play some more. Have my funeral about 7 a.m. and jam 'til the wee hours of the morning. In a barn with a fire burning just outside and old timers standing around telling those funny stories of all the stupid things I've done and then read my will to see who I left all my guitars and amps to. . . .

Hey all,

New member to the forum and happened to come across this thread - very timely, as my father (not quite 83) passed away a week ago today.

We all saw it coming, and it was kind of a weird mix of relief and sadness when it happened. And, one of the things we had to deal with was what music to play at the funeral - Mom (not quite 81) had the last say. There were some "church songs" (not that there's anything wrong with that) and "Turn, Turn, Turn" - beautifully performed by a singer and a keyboard (piano & organ) player.

Got me thinking about what I would want played at my funeral. (And Mom has her whole song list planned!)

I read through the thread and got a kick out of a lot of the suggestions. Seemed like "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" was the most requested.

My Dad was in hospice care the last week or so and said to my youngest brother as he was leaving one night, "See you in the next world..." - and I'm thinking, "Wow, Dad's chanelling Jimi now!" Which is kind of weird, because I don't think Dad ever really cared for Jimi's music. (...And don't be late.)

I suppose my favorites of other peoples' choices I saw were....

Always Look on the Bright Side of Life - Monty Python
The Great Gig In the Sky - Pink Floyd
("Shine On You Crazy Diamond" was pretty good too.)
Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - Jimi Hendrix
Requiem Mass in D Minor - Mozart

The ones I didn't see that I would like at my funeral were...

Europa (Earth's Cry, Heaven's Smile) - Santana
Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) - Green Day

After the funeral, we got together at my sister's house and ate and drank and played guitars & sang. The set list included...

I Ride an Old Paint - Traditional
The Weight - The Band (R.I.P. Levon)
Teach Your Children - Crosby, Stills & Nash
Souvenirs - John Prine
Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen
Oh Danny Boy - Traditional
The Dutchman - Michael Peter Smith/Steve Goodman
Where Have All the Flowers Gone? - Pete Seeger
The General - Dispatch

and a few others.

We had three generations singing. Dad would have liked that.

Requiescat in pace.

I don't care .... as long as they play it loud enough for me to hear.

The playlist will have to include Carmina Burana - ok, the "O Fortuna" movement that kicks it off. And, of course, Elvis Presley's "I'm Leavin'."
