Weird string buzz problem

Hi, I'm hoping someone has a good idea about this as I'm baffled.

I have a partscaster made from a '98 MIM tele body mated to a '86 MIJ Squire tele neck, and I added a 3-saddle threaded rod type bridge in place of the 6-saddle MIM bridge.

I have a bad buzz on the D string. Only that one string, and I know it's not a problem with one or two high frets because it happens all the way up the neck (not when playing the open string, but when fingering on every fret). I've tried raising the bridge saddle for the D and G strings way up, but it makes no difference, even when they're sitting 1/4 inch off the neck at the 12th fret. All the other strings play fine. I even tried flipping the saddle over in case there was a metal burr or something on the threaded rod, but that didn't help either. The neck is not overly bowed nor too straight, and all the other strings sound fine.

could this be a bad string? Or some sort of weird problem with the saddle? The nut was professionally installed and slotted only a few months ago, and wouldn't be involved anyway once the string was fretted. I can't believe every fret on the neck is high for just that one string and no others. The frets are not worn, by the way, and they look very even.

Any ideas?

It could very well be a bad string especially since it's a wound string. The winding may be loose causing the buzz. Replace the string. That's the best and easiest place to start IMHO.

try to isolate it by plucking the note(s) that cause it with your ear close to the various parts of the guitar....ie: headstock, neck, bridge, etc....
i once had a weird buzzing problem on a Tele, it turned out to be the spacer/ferrule on a tuning post....on another guitar (Epi Joe Pass) the switch buzzed on certain notes....
