can it be done? How so? I hate the #2 position on a typical tele, so if I could get the series thing going w/out the extra notch I'd be twanging fool!!!

series in #2 on a 3way switch?gottliver August 6th, 2003, 02:16 PM can it be done? How so? I hate the #2 position on a typical tele, so if I could get the series thing going w/out the extra notch I'd be twanging fool!!! curtisstetka August 6th, 2003, 02:56 PM You hate the middle position on a tele??!?!?!?! I'm fairly certain a stock 3 way won't do what you're asking. Are you adverse to adding a switch to your tele? You could put in a push/pull pot and your tele would still look stock. Edgar Jessup August 6th, 2003, 03:22 PM I know you can build your own custom 3-way switch from parts from electronic catalogues ( I know - I did)- the thing you need is called a wafer switch and you need 3 poles. you may find that the hole spacing might not match - in that case you'll have to make a new plate. In the UK you can get them from RS or Lorlin - not sure about the US. Personally I'd live with extra notch... Cheers - Ed. gottliver August 6th, 2003, 04:06 PM I generally stay on the bridge pup of my teles. I find the middle sound is too normal and polite for the way I play. And the neck often clashs with bassist. Too much low end. Besides I dig the bridge tone on a good tele pup. How about wiring the pups in series thru 2 vol knobs and 1 tone knob? This way I can feed the amount of low end I want into the bridge by dialing in the neck pup. I have a blender/master-tone/master-vol on 1 of my teles thats gets close but not right. My thought is that I'd leave the bridge like normal (i use the vol knob to control the amps overdrive) and bring in the neck when I want to fatten things up. The three way I can then use as pos1 straight thru, pos2 tone cap .001, pos3 tone cap .01. is this feasible? Caper August 6th, 2003, 04:30 PM I thought Fuzzy had just the diagram you are looking for. Edgar Jessup August 6th, 2003, 04:38 PM ...like jazz bass™ meets esquire™ btw: how non-standard are your teles? where did you stick the 3rd knob? -Ed James W August 6th, 2003, 04:43 PM Here's a link to stew-mac's website where they describe how it's done: http://stewmac.com/wiring101/pickup_wiring_modification.html I alos remember the wiring diagram that comes with tele texas specials shows them in series and not parallel with a 3-way switch. I hope this helps. --James W James W August 6th, 2003, 04:47 PM The second trick is for Teleplayers. It changes the #2 position of your 3-way switch, so that the bridge and neck pickups are in series instead of parallel. This is not a hum-cancelling combination, but it gives the increased power of a series link. For this alteration to work correctly, isolate the metal cover of the neck pickup (if present) from its ground lead. Run a separate ground wire for the cover to the back of the volume control. Figure 2 shows our Tele-style switches. You may have to "mirror-image" the Telestyle switch drawing if you use a Switchcraft or similar 3-way switch, to put the "common" lugs (#0, always in contact with the sweeper) in the proper locations. http://stewmac.com/wiring101/images/pickup_wiring_mod2.gif Try it and see! --James W Russinator August 6th, 2003, 05:03 PM The diagram that comes with a package of Tele Texas Specials has the middle position in series with the standard switch. I never noticed it because I just went ahead and wired in parallel like I always do. Probably installed 5 sets before someone on here mentioned it was in series - Probably that Murphy guy! : Michael Murphy August 6th, 2003, 05:42 PM  (Well I hope you're happy, Russ- you made me use another emoticon.....) -Michael Charter Member S. Texas He-Man Emoticon Haters Local #316 James W August 6th, 2003, 05:49 PM The diagram that comes with a package of Tele Texas Specials has the middle position in series with the standard switch. I never noticed it because I just went ahead and wired in parallel like I always do. I had the exact opposite experience! I wired them in series according to the enclosed diagram thinking that I was wiring them in parallel and I wondered why it sounded so thick -- it didn't even phase me that there were extra wires. Man, I'm dense! It wasn't until I installed a 4-way switch that I realized that it was series wiring! gottliver August 7th, 2003, 11:52 AM Thanks guys thats great info! My Tele isn't very non-standard. I just had a custom control plate made for it and had three pot holes drilled instead of the switch/vol/tone combo. I have it as follows vol on top, tone in the middle, blender last. Its a neat feature as I can get tons of different tones before using the ton knob. If i'm riding the lead pup and want to fatten it up a bit for a passage or lick i'll just roll in some neck pup. I'd like it in series so that the effect is stronger. The best part of all the info y'all gave me is that Im using texas specials! So I can just wire her up like the diagram!!!!!!!!!!! Yeehaaa! gottliver August 7th, 2003, 11:56 AM who's fuzzy?
