bj July 24th, 2003, 06:56 PM G'Day from Oz. I'm putting together a medley / collection of C Am F G - type songs for a few restaurant gigs coming up. I'll be backing a female singer - great bluesy voice - using acoustic and tele. But even though there are zillions of these songs around my mind has gone pretty blank just now. Can any of you suggest some well-known classics or cool modern songs with this format?
Thanks for your consideration - bj
Slim July 24th, 2003, 07:34 PM I'll try a few...
'Dream' - Everly Bros.
'Stay' - Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs
'Blue Moon' - Marcels
'Unchained Melody' - Righteous Bros
'Twistin the Night Away' - Sam Cooke
...and probably about 100 more from 1962! :D
TeleGeir July 24th, 2003, 07:44 PM For a bluesy voice, how about Tina Turner's version of "Help"?
Ok, it is Dm, not F, but Springsteen's Hungry Heart is cool too done slow and bluesy.
Geir :)
Tele295 July 24th, 2003, 08:07 PM We Belong Together - Ritchie Valens
Bob Mc July 24th, 2003, 08:44 PM You'll have 'em swaying at the salad bar.
Admin July 24th, 2003, 10:14 PM Sleepwalk is great, it's a tune I play all the time -- but the IV is a minor. That's pretty much the tune's "signature" sound. - CS
P.S. And it'd be tough to do with an acoustic and a vocalist... ;-)
Vincent Caster July 25th, 2003, 10:49 AM "It;s only Make Believe"
maxvintage July 25th, 2003, 11:19 AM "I love you (for sentimental reasons)"
Bob Mc July 25th, 2003, 12:14 PM we love you too!
Asat Bill July 25th, 2003, 08:54 PM the first tune I think of featuring this not so uncommon structure. I think Kim Wilson wrote a tune called "Wasted Tears"(?) for the T-birds a few years back, that's pretty cool.
Joel Terry July 26th, 2003, 12:45 PM Great, great song with a I-vi-IV-V intro and chorus, written by one of the great, great songwriters of all time, Robbie Robertson.
By the way, "It Makes No Difference" would be a wonderful song to perform in its entirety with just a vocalist and a guitar accompaniment.
Joel :)
Joel Terry July 26th, 2003, 12:55 PM "In The Still Of The Night" by The Five Satins
"Every Breath You Take" by The Police (verses)
Joel :)
Ward July 26th, 2003, 01:54 PM "Then You can Tell Me Goodbye" is a simple I vi IV V
einolaine July 26th, 2003, 06:57 PM "take good care of my baby" by bobby vee, "angel baby" (by god knows who but lennon did it also), "blue moon", "perfidia".
at last someone with a taste like mine!

tjalla July 27th, 2003, 12:36 AM "you send me" - goes to a ii V 1 vi bridge section.
I play in a blues band, but sometimes we segue into soul and I pull out this number for a bit of a change.

jerome July 28th, 2003, 02:28 AM "Last Kiss" was recorded by Pearl Jam a few years back...but I think it's a Buddy Holly song...I may be wrong...anyway, it's about a guy crashing his car, killing his girlfriend...you gotta love that...
Bob Rogers July 28th, 2003, 10:16 AM "Last Kiss" was recorded by Pearl Jam a few years back...but I think it's a Buddy Holly song...I may be wrong...anyway, it's about a guy crashing his car, killing his girlfriend...you gotta love that...
"Last Kiss" was originally performed by J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers.
Dave Barry talks about playing it with the Rock Bottom Remainers. Steven King adds the touching line...
When I awoke she was lying there.
I brushed her liver from my hair.
It is always nice to know that there are bands far worse than yours filled with people far richer than you.
Joe Bonner July 28th, 2003, 10:44 AM I think "Let it Be" is C Am F G, plus there's a pretty cool Telecaster solo in there. Bring your Leslie.
Joe
Vincent Caster July 28th, 2003, 12:20 PM "Waiting on a friend" has all them chords and cool little hammer on to the C chord riff that works for a tele.
Paul G. July 28th, 2003, 12:20 PM Sam and Dave--"When something is wrong with my baby"
C Am F G
Bridge: Em A Em A C Dm C F C G
They'll be dancing and crying. I think Aaron Neville and Linda Rondstadt covered it.
I VI II V--a little jazzier, but just as sweet.
"Since I Fell for You"--Standard
Otis Rush--"Fool for You"

The Last Thing on My Mind
chickenscratch July 28th, 2003, 12:37 PM I had the pleasure and good fortune to be hired by them to do a gig at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino last month in Sunland Park, NM...it was a great experience! Of course, I used my Tele and a Twin. Another early R&B classic you could try in that 1-6-4-5 would be "Daddy's Home."
stevieboy July 28th, 2003, 01:46 PM Let It Be is one of favorite songs to play solo as a chord melody type thing. It uses those chords but the order is different. C G am F C G F C
Somone mentioned Since I Fell for You--Dr. John does a killer version on "Back to New Orleams" and plays the guitar solo himself.
Joe Bonner July 28th, 2003, 03:13 PM Let It Be is one of favorite songs to play solo as a chord melody type thing. It uses those chords but the order is different. C G am F C G F C
Dang, serves me right for posting without a guitar in my hand!

div July 28th, 2003, 05:14 PM "You're Gonna Kill That Girl" by The Ramones.
"Be True To Your School"- Beach Boys (changes are different for the chorus, though).
"Duke of Earl" by..... I don't know who did duke of earl.
"Donna" by Richie Havens
"The KKK Took My Baby Away" Ramones again.
"Denise"- doo wop song done by I don't know who but covered by Blondie on their 2nd album.
stevieboy July 28th, 2003, 05:28 PM to when I took my first lessons, group lessons at the teen club--other military brats will know what I'm talking about. Anyway, one of the first songs we learned was "Where have all the flowers gone" a campfire anthem at the time. Of course, I'm not suggesting you do that song, Bluto from "Animal House" might show up and give your guitar the "I game my Love a Cherry " treament!
nedray July 28th, 2003, 05:50 PM "Mr. Blue"
Jay N. July 28th, 2003, 05:55 PM Sam and Dave--"When something is wrong with my baby"
C Am F G
Bridge: Em A Em A C Dm C F C G
P.
Great song. Wrongs chords though (as per the Sam and Dave version).
Bridge is Em to Am to Em to F
Chorus (part that repeats the the title) is C to Dm7 add something or other (add the C note, high E string, baby finger) back to C back to Dm7 add something or other.
The record is in Db, if'n that's important.
Yes, I have an annoying habit of pointing out spelling errors too :) .
Paul G. July 28th, 2003, 10:29 PM I shouldn't type out chords without a guitar in my hand.
When I know a song real well (been playing this one for at least 10 years), I don't think about what I'm doing, I just play, like a horse going back to the barn.
Bridge: Em A Em F
Then: when something is wrong...
C Dm C F C G (with the rise from a low E)
