I am contemplating adding a string tree to my Cray strat. I only hesitate because if I don't like it I will have an ugly hole in my headstock. Anyone added one and then regretted it? (I wish I wasn't so obsessive.)

I removed the second string tree from my Am. Standards and Hwy1 Strat.
I filled the second string tree's holes with a wax stick that's made for repairing furniture and cabinets. I have a maple colored one for my cabinets that matches well. It's not noticeable from a few feet away.

...REMOVE the second string tree. it doesn't do anything (except, some folks say, suck tone), and it makes restringing tricker.
and any permanent mod (like a screw hole) devalues guitars. significantly.
don't.

Are you sure you need one? I have no tuning problems with my Cray strat with one T.

I wound up selling it. Great guitar but just couldn't get it setup to my liking.

i thought adding a second was to give more of an angle and hence better sustain. lots of guitarists do the above the nut pushing thing for some kind of tone stuff ( which to me is neither here nor there ) i guess they have to impress someone,,,eric johnsons strat is an example of a single tree strat, and he does that pushing thing... ive added two trees on all my teles and think they are ok, although im not on the opry. i think they have added some over all sustain. so i say if your not playin nashville or any other major venue if you are happy then im happy, and i wont tell eric or robert cray you did it. tonally i think you will like it

I added a second tree to my tele to cure a problem of unwanted vibration behind the nut. There have been several threads about this!

Bear in mind that you won't be able to do those cool behind-the-nut bends on the G anymore...

I was thinking about this a couple of weeks ago. I wonder if anyone makes a behind-the-nut string bending device that screws down, acts like string trees and has a place to press on to bend the string. At this moment I'm too busy/lazy to google it, but I'm sure it's not beyond the wit of someone to make and market such a device.

Maybe it's my imagination, but I think strats with the 2nd string tree feel too stiff on those 2 strings.
I recently A/B'd this by taking them out of the tree and putting them back in.
I like them better out.
You just have to get used to winding just the right amount of string so it goes to the bottom of the post.
