Buffer's & on-board effect loops

Has anyone tried a Unity Buffer or onboard effects loop, ala Jerry Garcia. I've got a 72 Custom RI and have always dug Jerry's tone and though it may be a cool to try some different things control wise.

Any experiences, good or bad, and comments on tonal changes would be greatly appreciated.

I'm thinking the onboard loop may be a bit much, but the idea of the onboard buffer is still appealing.
