who makes the best shorty effects cables?popthree March 19th, 2006, 12:55 AM who makes the best shorty effects cables? Scotland March 19th, 2006, 07:52 AM George L cables are excellent for pedal connectors and no soldering required either. Iversen March 19th, 2006, 08:05 AM Planet Waves has an excellent pedal board kit: 10 gold-plated plugs and 10' of their high quality cable and a cable cutter. No soldering, all you need is a small screw driver and you're all set. bluescube March 19th, 2006, 09:09 AM I use the cheaper HOSA connectors  popthree March 19th, 2006, 12:11 PM I use the cheaper HOSA connectors  how cheap are they? red57strat March 19th, 2006, 12:39 PM George L's are great and not too expensive either. tweedtone March 19th, 2006, 06:09 PM Another vote for George L's! popthree March 19th, 2006, 07:12 PM I've always been wary of George L's because some people seem to love them, and others hate them. but yeah, they are cheap... for $50.00 you get enough stuff to make 10 cables..that's basically 5 bucks per. i can't seem to find decent cables, or even buy the parts to make them any cheaper than that. i've always just made my own shorties using switchcraft jacks, and old guitar cables. red57strat March 19th, 2006, 07:23 PM George L's are better if you're using a pedal board and the cables don't need to be unplugged constantly. Even then, if you're careful with them, they're not bad. 10 cables for $50 would be an incredible deal. The patch kit that I've got came with 10 feet of cable and 10 connectors. Enough to make 5 cables. Still, $10 a cable isn't bad. My crappy ones were between $5 and $7! popthree March 19th, 2006, 09:26 PM i don't know what i was thinking...you are right Red, I guess I cannot add. 49.99 for 10' cable and 10 connectors...yes, enough for 5 1' patch cables. Tim Bowen March 20th, 2006, 02:27 AM I've been using George L's cables as patch cords since their inception. To my ear, the high end fidelity and hyper-harmonic content of George L's is the only way to go with a pedal board, short of using peds with ultra-zingy, metallic highs, such as Line 6 DL-4. Also, those that run minimalist signal chains with bright Fender amps and traditional Telecaster bridge pickups might find GL's a tad zingy and present. I gig GL's weekly and have had exactly two (2) cable failures in ten or so years of regular use (operator error). I have several boards that I use, and swap peds out as to situation, act, and gear. I dab a bit of Elmer's glue onto the screw threads of GL right angle plugs via a Q-tip during assembly. Works like a charm. bluescube March 20th, 2006, 07:07 AM http://www.music123.com/Hosa-Pedal-Effect-Jumper-Cable-i13202.music http://images.music123.com/products/full/Hosa/13202nf.jpg saunders.jesse March 20th, 2006, 09:54 AM I have a love hate relationship with George L's. They sound great, but I've had 2 or 3 failures in about 1.5 years of playing with them. My current preference for pedal cables are ones I made myself from Fender Electro-volt dual right angle patch cables and a older canibalized 20' monster cable. I soldered them up myself so they'll last nearly forever and I was able to customize the lenths and directions of the plugs to my pedalboard arangement. Wayne Alexander March 20th, 2006, 11:55 AM If you want the "best," in my experience you need good cable with good connectors that are soldered on. I've used George L's, and found that the screw-in connectors can't be trusted to stay in for months at a time without one of them, somewhere on the board, going intermittent. I've found that Lava Cables, see link here http://www.lavacable.com/ will make you exactly what you want, with George L cable if you want, though I've found that Canare GS-6 cable with Neutrik connectors to be the best sounding and most durable. halouis March 20th, 2006, 01:51 PM i tried the george Ls for a bit and still have'm but dont use them. I prefer solid soldered Proco shorties. They dont degrade the signal and are much more hearty. The GLs just would eventually get tempermental and then you gotta recut it. Not fun when setting up for a gig. They did sound nice and clear though. I personally need dependability for my 2 or 3 pedals. Charlie Bernstein March 30th, 2006, 07:04 PM just tried the above-mentioned lava and proco web sites. neither seems to have any specific product or ordering info. if you're shopping for shorties, you're out of luck! bender72 March 31st, 2006, 01:04 PM I like to use these (http://www.music123.com/Hosa-Pedal-Effect-Jumper-Cable-i557913.music) effects cables, they are not the best but they are reliable and cheap. I think I bought them for around $4.00 each or cheaper. Jazzy Jay March 31st, 2006, 03:15 PM The best ones are the ones you make yourself. George L or Canare or another quality cable cut to the lenghts you need on your board, flat Switchcraft right angle plugs and a soldering iron is all you need. It's not illegal to solder George L's cable.... Cheers, Johan. Durango Twango March 31st, 2006, 03:48 PM I wired mine up with thhe flat switchcraft 90 degree jacks so they take up less room. I actually prefer the solder connections as well - just mechanically. They are completely transparent and I think I get less signal loss. I use them for guitar cables and they have ALWAYS worked and never color the tone. They're also not stupid expensive. tweedtone March 31st, 2006, 03:51 PM After reading this thread, I bought a Canare 20' from Lava Cables. Very impressed thus far. Zero handling noise and a very supple, i.e. resists tangling, feel. Liked that I could be it with angled jacks on both ends. Haven't done an A/B comparison yet with the Monster I was using. Joel Terry April 2nd, 2006, 05:43 AM I use the cheaper HOSA connectors  how cheap are they? I use Hosa CFS107 (http://www.geartree.com/Shop/Control/Product/fp/vpid/1357648/vpcsid/0/SFV/29865) jumper cables to connect my pedals. They are quality cables, as far as I'm concerned. And because of their ultra-thin metal-shell ends, they are excellent space savers, too, as you can see: http://www.tdpri.com/telephoto/data/539/medium/JDT_pedalboard.JPG Depending on where you buy them, the CFS106 (molded ends) costs anywhere from $1.95 (USD) to $5.95 each. The CFS107 (metal-shell ends) costs anywhere from $3.95 to $7.95 each. Joel photoweborama April 4th, 2006, 12:01 PM I use some cable I got at Guitar Center. The cable started out as an 18' cable they sell for $35.00... I just hacked it into small pieces and bought Switchcraft right angle plugs. I don't notice any signal loss, but who knows. I intend to change the cable to George L's eventually, but I'm keeping the Swithcraft solder on plugs. I feel more secure with solder on.... http://www.tdpri.com/telephoto/data/539/medium/JDT_pedalboard.JPG WOW! Mr. Sparkle April 4th, 2006, 06:54 PM http://www.tdpri.com/telephoto/data/539/medium/JDT_pedalboard.JPG WOW! Plus 1! the guy who invented fire April 6th, 2006, 12:11 AM Go George L's and you'll never look back! photoweborama April 11th, 2006, 11:36 AM Go George L's and you'll never look back!Funny you should say that. I was re doing the cables on my board, I prefer solder connections so I bought a bunch of switchcraft plugs. I did not want to make the cables twice, so I ordered 15' of George L's cable. I just replaced the five jumpers on the board, not even the amp cables or the guitar cord. I turned it on for the first time, and wow! the noise level alone dropped considerably. I just ordered the rest of the cable to do my 2 amps and my guitar cord. wildstrat April 11th, 2006, 04:52 PM I use the inexpensive Fender Electrovolt 6-in. cables through MusiciansFiend. They seem to work fine and are dead quiet. I have 6 of them, and none have failed in two years. If I were to replace them, I would probably buy the 6-in. 20/20 cable from Voodoo Amps. photoweborama April 12th, 2006, 01:01 AM I use the inexpensive Fender Electrovolt 6-in. cables through MusiciansFiend. They seem to work fine and are dead quiet. Well, I'm glad the work well for you. I have a few Fender Electrovolt guitar cables and I pick up radio stations, and all sorts of noise on mine. They are the cables I loan to my 11 year old son's friends when they come over to play. wildstrat April 12th, 2006, 03:43 PM I know what you mean. I've read bad reviews on those cables too. But I swear the 6-in. ones work fine. In fact, I keep looking for a reason to replace them, but it is a low priority since they perform just fine. I'm pretty picky about my sound, so if there was any noise/hiss in the signal, they would be gone. But for now they will stay. I like the soldered ends, which is why I won't switch to George L's. But, like I said, if I was buying again I'd probably pick up some from Voodoo Amps. rand z April 18th, 2006, 12:37 PM i picked up some bill lawrence (willi) cables about a year ago, and also some george L at: http://www.jmimusic.com/ they have both been great, but lawrence has cable and connectors for a better $. check out his site: http://www.billlawrence.com/ the bill lawrence cables are the better deal and the are pretty much the same as the george L's in the "smaller" diameter for connecting effects.. george L's comes in the large diameter which is better for the regular guitar cables. imho rand z - tropicalsoul.net photoweborama April 20th, 2006, 01:21 PM I buy most of my parts at JMI Music, though I'm really stuck on the value of the GFS pickups... I have a set of Strat pickups in for a review, and he sent a complete set of electronics with the pickups. I was a bit apprehensive of those Alpha pots he sells, but I actually like the quality a bit more than CTS. I have all George L's on my amp setup. I used solder connectors. The noise level went way down. Great stuff. |
