Hi all..First post here at TDPRI...I am close to purchasing a new overdrive for my pedalboard. Ive narrowed down my choices to the above Zendrive or Fulltone OCD. I like the tone for the OCD at their website but I know that the Zendrive gets raves. Both are the same price. Im leaning towards the Zendrive..I am also a big Robben Ford and Larry Carlton fan. What do all of you think and have any of you played both to sway your decision? My amps are a 79 Princeton Reverb and a 78 Vibro Champ. I would appreciate any opinions...Thanks.

I've got an OCD and it is great. I'm also running a FD2 and a Keeley Modded Sparkle Drive. The FD2 Mosfet is probably going to go. The OCD rocks, is very flexible and transparent.

Curious as to where you are going to purchase the Zendrive. Musictoyz.com has at least a 3 month wait and on EBay, this one is selling for $300! Double the retail price. If you've got a connection, let us know.

I thinking of paying for one on Musictoyz.com and just waiting.

Sorry man, didn't mean to burst your bubble.

I just put in my purchase for the Zendrive at Musictoyz.com. Thanks for reminding me. I figure for $160 I want to see what all the fuss is about. Like you, I have been impressed with sound clips I have heard. While I'm not a huge country fan, I do admire the picking of Brad Paisley and he uses a Zen.

I will say again how impressed I am with the OCD. I've lived with the following OD's
- Tonebone - sold it
- Boss BD2 - sold it
- Tonecore - Crunch Tone - sold it
- Fulltone FD2 Mosfet - will sell
- Sparkle Drive w/Keeley mod - keeper
- OCD - best 'o the bunch

I'm also going to try to get a MI Audio Blues Pro. Not too expensive ($89, I think) and great reviews.

Hopefully someone will add comments regarding their Zendrive experience.

There's a wait for the Blues Pro now, too... it never takes long for the small builders to get jammed up.

While the Zendrive nails RF's sound (it should, as that's what he uses), there are a couple of other pedals that can get close to it, and they've been in production long enough that there's no wait:

Menatone Howie

Barber Burn Unit

One of those might get you by until your Zendrive arrives! :)

well no OCD for me, but I love my Zendrive, very flexible sweet overdrive, has worked with several amps for me, great build quality too.

For a couple of dollars more (new) or the same price (used) you could pick up a MI Audio Blues Pro and Crunch Box. They should cover all your overdrive and distortion needs. Both pedals are worth looking for.

I've got the Zen on my board and it kicks butt.

We opened up for Aaron Watson which is a Texas based country band, and the guitar player Jason Lerma saw the Zen on my board, and was asking alot of questions about it. He'd heard about it,but never played one. I asked if he wanted to use it,and he took me up on it. He had alot of Keeley modded Boss pedals on his board and a Nobels ODR-1. He used it, and after the show he said it blew away everything on his board. He's now ordering a Zen 1 and Zen 2.

Hey Tex. I see you have a Barber Direct Drive in your stable. How do the Zendrive and Direct Drive compare?

hi,
welcome to the tdpri,
i recommend the zendrive, for it has this round sweet overdrive sound, i also apreciate with larry carlton and co.
it is easy to dial in and not noisy at all.
my setup is:

tele > korg dt10 tuner > keeley comp > zendrive > sparkledrive ( clean boost mode ) > ibanez ad9 > dr.z

and thatīs it !
take care

I have both the older(they've been revised) OCD and the ZenDrive. Took me 2-3 months to get my ZenDrive and that was back in the late fall. I am more into OCD, but still like the ZenDrive. The reason I like the OCD a bit more is the their is more gain on tap if I want it. That just suites my playing style. But the ZenDrive can nail a Dumble like Robben Ford tone if you set it up right with a blackfaced Fender.

The Barber DD is awsome with any of my Fender amps. Since the Fenders dont have a mid control the Barber with it's slight mid hump, just sits nicely in the mix. It's my main lead pedal. I've owned alot of pedals and it's still here. What does that tell you. I've recently added a Maxon OD-820 and a Voodoo Lab Sparkledrive. Both are used for varying amounts of overdriven rhythm.
