Phil Keaggy anyone?TheGoodTexan December 9th, 2005, 12:03 AM xx Nub December 9th, 2005, 11:03 AM I recently picked up a live DVD of him, playing with Randy Stonehill. The solo stuff he does on it with his loopers is incredible... he's a fantastic player! I'll definitely check out that album... Thanks for the head's up! TheGoodTexan December 9th, 2005, 11:43 AM xx jumpnblues December 23rd, 2005, 10:52 AM ...giGANtic talent. And he's pretty good too. 8) Tom Pierce December 24th, 2005, 08:10 AM with the looper.. amazing! The cool thing of a sound engineering point of view.. the sound check was done with a cd ripped from a previous sound check.. they did evrything from vocal cues to guitar cues and levels. great show.. tom grossheider December 30th, 2005, 12:44 PM Jaw dropping player, and quite a humble guy too. Used to have that album on cassette tape but it was stolen out of my truck a few years back. Hope that the message in it has touched someone's heart! Don't remember that song, are there MP3s available anywhere, or can you send a sample? Telesaurus December 31st, 2005, 11:10 AM Ok, first off....I am not disagreeing with you guys, but I've listened to 3 or 4 songs by him & honestly haven't heard any playing that is outstanding. I'm just figuring I've heard the wrong songs...so could you guys give me the names of the songs that you are so impressed with? There are just way to many people that are saying he is great, for it not to be true, so I just want to save myself some money & time, because he has quote a lot of music out & I 'm too cheap to just keep buying. :) Telesaurus December 31st, 2005, 01:19 PM OK.....I just heard a bit of "Nothing but the Blood", from a radio special called, Blue. That is some pretty impressive playing & since it was him alone, it is even a better way to wet my appetite. Now, more than before, I'd sure appreciate a list of your Phil Keaggy favorites...a list of his most awesome playing. TheGoodTexan December 31st, 2005, 05:45 PM xx Pierce January 1st, 2006, 06:10 AM I've heard realesed to his fan club Tim TRuman (abba abba kong) had some of these and they were incredible jams worthy of EJ/Hendrix etc Crimson and Blue is one of my favorites.. Phil had a double album in the 70/80's "master and the musician" that is great also tom grossheider January 1st, 2006, 06:10 PM "Acoustic Sketches" is fabulous, as is "Majesty and Wonder, An Instrumental Christmas" Phil Keaggy with the London Festival Orchestra. I will have to get Crimson and Blue again, a later album was called "220" really nice stuff there. He also did an album with Wes King and Scott Dente called "Invention" that is really good, each artist stretching out on their own stuff and and adding to everyone else's. TelecasterSam April 13th, 2006, 10:34 PM Awesome player. I also have that album and would like to find more of his current music. LuthierTom April 14th, 2006, 08:58 AM Telesarus- I have been a PK fan for 30+ years. TheGoodTexan said it very well as far as Phil's recorded material is concerned, but I have yet to hear an album that captures him the way he is live. If you get the chance, go see him. I like him best with a band (I have seen him twice in the last 5 years with Glass Harp) but as a solo artist the stuff he does with loopers is amazing. He is also quite nutty onstage, and a very humble guy. He does a cover of Blind Faith's "In The Presence of the Lord" with Glass Harp (don't know if they have ever released it on CD) where Phil out-Claptons EC. LT Ten Brooks November 20th, 2006, 11:07 PM "Wind and the Wheat" is awesome. maestrovert November 21st, 2006, 10:45 AM Ok, first off....I am not disagreeing with you guys, but I've listened to 3 or 4 songs by him & honestly haven't heard any playing that is outstanding. DerekMcTele November 21st, 2006, 11:49 AM I'm listening to "On the Fly" presently. My favorites are still "Beyond Nature", "220", and "The Wind and the Wheat". backmantele November 21st, 2006, 12:10 PM Been a Keaggy fan since I went to Expo '72. He is an awsome person. Chrismeyer November 21st, 2006, 12:17 PM Good luck learning that stuff!my friends, Kings X, were his back up band before they got signed as "Sneck Preview",that's WAY back. I don't even mess with stuff like that,I don't like breaking guitars, and that woud lead to it! Jackson Jackson December 8th, 2006, 07:57 PM Crimson and Blue is BY FAR my favorite Keaggy album, and one of my personal top 20 albums of all time! I've covered his version of John The Revelator a couple of times - always a crowd pleaser! And yes, Nothing but the blood is simply wonderful. williamfriggle December 8th, 2006, 10:17 PM Beyond Nature is my favorite. It is all acoustic but blows me away every time I listen. It is out of print and can be hard to find but I saw Itunes has it for down load. If you like acoustic music, check it out. I have been a fan for 20 years. Some of his stuff can get kinda weird, but it is all incredable music. His yuning his guitar sounds better than my best playing. LOL! He is interviewed in Vintage Guitar magazine this past month. Short article, but good. He has some killer guitars in his collection. Bill Nub December 9th, 2006, 11:33 AM One of my favorite Keaggy looper clips: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nV3bLZLpqTQ telechucker December 20th, 2006, 04:02 AM Phil is a jaw dropper. I've got a live DVD of him (Philly live, I think) and he's doing his loop stuff. (really well I might add !) His chops are razor sharp and he seems to be a wonderful humble man. I wish he'd tour Australia again. collinsman December 20th, 2006, 08:03 AM Beyond Nature is my favorite. It is all acoustic but blows me away every time I listen. Willie D December 20th, 2006, 08:19 AM "Hymnsongs" is a tremendous album JohnSS December 23rd, 2006, 12:58 PM Keaggy's "Time -Vol. I & II" are good overviews of his electric and acoustic material including his Glass Harp days. JukeJointJimmy December 23rd, 2006, 04:17 PM "Crimson and Blue" is an album that has moved me time and time again....both spiritually and musically!! There is a PK disc out called "Jammed" that is simply recordings of some of Phil and fellow bandmembers ...you guessed it....jamming. Some incredible playing by Phil as well as his seasoned bass player and drummer!! Check it out! Jimmy ><> LesPaulGuy December 27th, 2006, 02:24 PM Phil is the "benchmark" as far as a guitarist, a human being, and a follower of Christ is concerned. I was fortunate enough to play on the same billing with him & his band for a bunch of gigs back in the '80's, and no other player has made the impression on me as he did. He even had to use my amp for one gig (a Marshall JCM 800 combo) but, even though he was very appreciative about it, I could tell he didn't really care for it. I used (at the time) a straight "Les Paul into Marshall" setup with high gain settings, but he normally had his (new at the time) pedals for effects with a clean amp tone. Crimson and Blue is also my favorite (I still play it from time to time), so I am wondering if anything he has released since then is similar to this? Pickalittle July 4th, 2007, 04:02 AM May I be honest here, since you asked an honest question? Phil is an incredible guitarist. He was very instrumental (pardon the pun) in the development of contemporary Christian music (CCM). However,I find his music too ecclectic and "out there" for my tastes. I appreciate his skill, but do not enjoy much of his music. Our church hosted Phil years ago and I got to talk with him for some time since I was the lead guitarist there. I found Phil, the human being, to be a great guy. I was dazzled by the skill it would take to play his music, but stylistically, he's not my thing. JohnSS July 5th, 2007, 04:27 PM Find Me in These Fields, Beyond Nature, Glass Harp Live at Carnegie Hall and Time 1 & 2 are also worth checking out for the Phil Keaggy fan hotraman July 6th, 2007, 10:21 PM Its great to still see Phil playing after all these years. Him, & Randy Stonehill put out some great Christian rock in the early 1970's & 1980"s. Keaggy has the echoplex delay down to an artform! Steve |
