George L Cable Checker

Just found the George L Cable Checker on their website.

What is it for? Is it to simply check to see if a cable is working? I can usually figure that out myself. Or, does it test the quality of the signal? Anyone own one?

I saw a demo of this at the 2004 Dallas Guitar Show. I guess it would be handy to tell if your made on the fly George L cable was working if the environment was too noisy to test it otherwise.

When I make a new GL cable, I plug it into a small battery powered Fender practice amdp (MA10). Then I rub the other plug. If it makes noise, it works. If not, I take the plugs off and try again.

I've got one of these and they are essential at gigs to find the bad cable quickly (especially XLR and midi cables):

With only a red LED I'm pretty sure it could only test for continuity which, let's face it, is more of an issue with George L's than with any other cable on the market!

I should stress that I do love George L's and now find it difficult to use anything else. The only problem I ever have with them is with the right angled patch cables becoming intermittent. In every case this has been cured by simply tightening the thumbscrew to secure the cable......I wish they could incorporate some kind of lock to stop it coming undone in the first place!

I've contemplated using some sort of locking compound like Loc-Tite to keep those right angle plugs together.

George L makes a plastic cap to go over the thumb screw on the right angle plug, it has a slit in it that fits over the cable and it prevents the thumb screw from backing out

No, it doesn't.
