Keeley's DD-3...telepbrman November 3rd, 2005, 04:19 AM Has anyone played this DD-3? I am wondering about the "analog" feel of the pedal...thanks, dy. Tim Bowen November 4th, 2005, 02:03 AM I'm curious as to the differences in tone and character of the repeats between the high cut mods that Robert Keeley and Analog Mike offer for the DD-3. Also wondering how either of these stack up against the warmer sounding el cheapo digitals such as Ibanez EM-5 and Dan-Echo. I've asked around about this, but haven't had any bites. Not trying to stir up a can o' worms, just curious, as I'm considering warming up my DD-3. JohnnyAtomic November 4th, 2005, 11:57 AM I tried it at the Arlington guitar show. I really liked it, but anything you hear at that show has to be taken with at least a grain of salt. That is a HUGE concrete and very loud room. I usually don't try to judge what anything sounds like in there. But, with that being said what I heard was VERY good. It softened the high end of the repeats like a good analog delay. Plus that loop was incredibly cool, sounded like tape flanging. Johnny Atomic Tim Bowen November 21st, 2005, 05:33 AM I never really could find any assessments as to differences between Mike's and Robert's offerings... it was probably silly of me to ask... sorry, I'm just the curious sort. Both of those guys have done wonderful work for me... I went with Mike's mod to save some bucks, as I didn't really require the TRS cable and loop options... Anyway... modded pedal arrived, so I tossed it on board for an acoustic job this past weekend. As preface, among the small box digitals, I've always liked the tone of Dano Dan-Echo and Ibanez EM5, in that order, but have always preferred the dependability and bypassed tone of the BOSS to either, but never really warmed up to the tone of the DD-3... the 'hi-cut' mod effectively rounds off the DD-3's pristine high end repeats, such that it doesn't slap you in the back of the head... at sound check prior to the job, I went back & forth between 'rolled off' and 'stock' mode, via the toggle, and thought, "yep, the stock tone is useless and obnoxious, just as recalled". Does the modded BOSS digital compete with analog or tape units? Of course not. BUTTT it lends a warmer tone to the predictability of the BOSS unit, which among cheaper sleepers, is safer than most. I really enjoyed kicking in the pedal during the show. Haven't played the pedal with electric guitars yet. analogmike November 21st, 2005, 12:26 PM Thanks for the post, Tim, always good to see followup posts. Let us know how you like it with the electrics. I think the DD3 is quite a good little delay pedal. Have fun! Tim Bowen November 24th, 2005, 04:11 AM Thank you, Mike, for the good work and quick turnaround (as per usual). I had a chance to play the modded unit with my alt. country band (Tele ---> reissue Vibroverb). Modded tone is far more useful than is the stock tone for my purposes, and is more receptive to being hit hard by a gainer (I used a "Timmy"). This BOSS box has sat on the shelf for a while, but is now a practical tool, for me. |
