VS Jeckyl & Hyde with DRRI??

Anyone try this combo??
I'm going through my "pedal thing" again. I love my RT 66, but I've been looking for a more "gnarly" distortion to go along with it as of late....y'know?
The RT-66 mates soooo well with my Tele and Deluxe, as does the H2o, so what I'm courious about is if the J&H mates just as well....or will it sound all grainy and fizzy like most other Distortion units do with the DRRI?
The latest casuality is the Bixonic Expandora 2001 (nos), it may be ok with another amp but boy it that thing bright!!!! Even with the tone knob completely off. That switch is flimsy too, it'll get returned to the store today. Again, with another setup , I'm sure it sounds wonderfull...just not with mine!!! (lol)
"Oh Lord...is it too much to ask to get a pedal that get's that "My Head's is Missisippi" kinda tone with my setup??
( AM Ash Tele/Tu-2/Crybaby/RT-66/H2o/DRRI btw..)
Thanks,
CHEERS!!!

I had a Tele and J&H running thru the blackface channel of my Tone King Comet 40B, which also runs 6V6s, so its quite a similar setup.

I too found the distortion side of the J&H to have too much grain and fizz, tho the TS808 side was nice for the typical SRV-tubescreamer-blackface amp sound. The J&H prefered my Pro Jr which is darker...

I think its the same upper treble frequecies that are "glassy" when clean become "fizzy" when overdriven with a pedal. Maybe if you do the bright cap mod to the DRRI it would be more pedal friendly? Just a guess!

I did some work with the band Kings of Leon. The lead guitar palyer in that band WILL NOT let go of his RT66. What he has done is to place an MXR Micro-Amp in front of the RT66 which he stomps on for solos. These are plugged into a 50-watt Ampeg combo. He gets good tone for what he's going for.

See, I actually like the DRRI's sound as is. The fundamental tone is ok with my setup, I hit the Comp side of the RT 66 and there's the tone I want. I can dial out a smidge of the high end with the tone pot on the pedal, and there I am; nice wiry chickin pickin Fender tone. I don't want to risk loosing that by modding the caps, just so I can get higher gain sounds occaisionally....y'know what I mean???
The OD side if the '66 ,I love too. I'm hoping that the J&H will match as well as the 66 does...I ordered one from Reverend yesterday.
Thanks for the input guys....I'll let ya' know how I make out.

a lot of folks love the OCD by Fulltone. I've yet to hear one live, but it's on my "watch list" of pedals. I'm looking to try it to compliment my Fulldrive. The FD is great, but again for the TS type stuff. I'd like to have an "edgier" OD in addition.

I play some country music with Teles through a DRRI, including some squeaky clean stuff. In my opinion, snipping that amp's bright cap does not adversely affect the inherent "sparkle" at all - it simply improves the amp's overall tonal timbre and versatility.

With regard to use with dirtboxes & gainers - snipping the cap, along with replacing the speaker (with a Reverend Alltone, in my case) - took that amp from the point of hating every gainer I threw at it, to getting along quite well with a variety of them, for me personally.

For what it's worth, the dirt chain I've been using at recent live jobs with the DRRI is:

Teles --> Timmy --> Lovepedal Eternity --> Klon Centaur

When I choose a Deluxe, the amp's volume is set at around 6 or 7, and I simply don't require the mondo gain of a fuzz or distortion, as the amp is doing most of the work. I seem to get along best with lower wattage amps when employing a couple of well-matched gainers, with their gain pots set low-to-medium. That said, the best dedicated distortion stomper I've heard through a Deluxe is the BJFE Dyna Red.

I tried the J&H with my Deluxe Reverb around the house with a Tele and Strat. It had a wide range of sounds, and it owuld probably sound fine in a band context. But when I A/B'd it to other pedals like the Vox Valvetone or the Blackstone Appliances MOSFET overdrive, the J&H sounded a bit like the overdrive was riding on top of the note rather than being an
integral part of it.

Try a Zinky True Grit for a modded marshall sound with the boost switch. The normal od side is transparent, uncompressed but can have a hint of fuzz. Still it's a great pedal. Compared to my RT66 the Zinky is more open and organic.

Brought my setup to work with me this past tour (Tele, pedalboard,DRRI) cause I had the J&H sent to my work address. It came a few days ago and I'm glad I ordered it.
It sounds great , no fizz!!! The Jeckyl side isn't quite as bright as my RT-66 ( an older 66' btw, w/o the second switch for the comp), but has a cool rock sound. It tames some of the treble and twang in the Tele and works real well for ZZ Top/AC/DC / Cult / older Van Halen type crunch.
The Hyde side is the gnarly firebreather. TONS of gain with a cool ,stack-like oooph. You can even approach older Metallica type scooped sounds, ( cause playing that stuff with a Tele and a Deluxe is just plain funny to me!!! . But serioulsy....
I'm still fiddilin with the tones and am still in the tweaking phase, but so far so good. It took no time at all to get good sounds from it. Depending who I'm jamming /playing with though, it's nice to have some thicker midrange gain at my disposal. The last group I played with had everything from Alan Jackson to Foo Fighters to ZZ Top to Santana in the setlist , and I really could have used this pedal in places.
The only wierd thing about this box is , I'd almost think that the OD would be on the right side and the Dist would be on the left. Not so in the J&H. I'm sure there's an explaination but where I keep the 66' next to the J&H, it'd be cool to have the Od switches on the two pedals closer so say, the Jeckyl could be set for a Lead tone and the 66 for chords. That way , I clould switch to the preset lead sound with one tap of the foot...y'know wadImean???
I really like Visual Sound's stuff, I have all three boxes now and love the sounds I can get. If they made a neat Wah and a Tuner pedal I could use nothing but VS!!!!

Try both sides together... it's quite tasty.

I set both sides with a little less gain than "usual", then the left side is the "slight break up " side, the right side is the "crunch" side, & both together are my lead sound.

It's a great pedal, although it requires some fussing with the levels if you turn your amp up, I've noticed.
