All things Jimmy Reed.

I'm reading his biography: "Big Boss Man - The Life & Music Of Bluesman Jimmy Reed", by Will Romano (Backbeat Books, 2006, ISBN-10: 0-87930-878-8, ISBN-13: 978-0-87930-878-0)

The trio of Jimmy Reed, Eddie Taylor, and Earl Phillips, was truly the "Jimmy Reed Sound", as we know it today. It's great to listen to those old recordings again, now with more knowledge, and better ears.

It's a great sound.

Jimmy Reed sold more records than Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and Little Walter!

I'll get back to you later. Must read & listen!

A CD by Etta James: "Her Best", Chess. A 20-track compilation recorded 1960-1970.

It's all there: Kicking off with "At Last", followed by "Sunday Kind Of Love", "Something's Got A Hold On Me", a live-recording of "Baby, What You Want Me To Do", "Security" and "I'll Rather Go Blind" as the highlights.

She was a wonderful singer! Pity that drugs and alcohol prevented her from becoming a giant star ...

It is 10pm and my 6yo daughter is asleep. So the CD player is off. Instead I am listening to the A/C unit of my next door neighbor. She is psychotic, and won't open her windows to let the cool night air in. At least if her windows are closed, we can't hear her. Which is the best of all possible worlds.

Get back from the throne room, and it's Tom Waits doing some cool stuff that I hope shows up on youtube. He had something spread all over the stage so that when he started stomping his feet, he raised a huge cloud of dust. Great effect.

Johnny Young, "Johnny Young & Friends", (Testament TCD 5003).

Recorded 1962-66 in Chicago, with "friends" like: Little Walter, Big Walter Horton, Otis Spann, Robert Nighthawk, Jimmy Walker, Slim Willis, and others.

Young was not only a great blues mandolinist, but also a superb rhythm guitarist, and one of my favorite blues singers.

This is deep and heavy music. True as life itself.

I'm on a Johnnie Taylor trip tonight.

Four CDs spinning in the player. At this moment, one of my favorite Taylor tunes, "It's September" (1973), is playing.

This man's voice is pure soul.

Btw, this song has an utterly cool bass line!

---------------------------------------------------------

It’s September, yeah, you’ve been gone so doggone long
Well, it’s September, yeah, you’ve been gone all summer long
Well, last long distance call you made must have been a lie
‘Cause you said that you’d be home by the 4th of July
Tell me why you’re still gone…

It’s October, just two weeks to Halloween
It is October, baby, I still haven’t heard or seen (how long you..?)
Why would you wanna make me blue, after all I’ve done for you
You know I’ve always taken the best care of you
Tell the truth now, baby, tell the truth now, baby…

Happy Thanksgiving, baby, have you lost that loving feeling?
Well, happy Thanksgiving, baby, have you lost that loving feeling?
You know, the children ask me every day: why did you go away?
I just give them an alibi. I can’t look them in the eye
Woman, how long are you gonna be gone, are you gonna be gone?

Merry Christmas, baby, well, (… you a gift …) oh, I wanted you to know
That the door is still open, even though my heart is sad and broken
Girl, I’m just hoping that you won’t make me wait, I just can’t wait…
I just can’t wait until next September
That’s such a long, long time…

Don’t make me wait, baby…
Are you trying to drive me out of my mind..?
Oh Lord, baby…
We started out together, baby…
And now you want to leave me behind, baby…
Why you wanna do it..huh?
You know I love you, baby…oh, well
I love you better than I do myself
It is October, November, December…
And that’s too long…

----------------------------------------------------------

Sorry if the lyrics are incomplete, I just transcribed it on the fly…

Please correct me if you will.

I wish you all a soulful evening!

/ Tony
