I just treated myself to a 4-CD compilation boxed set, "Hitsville USA, The Motown Singles Collection 1959 - 1971".

104 classic songs from the legendary Detroit era - 36 different artists.

It's all there ... All the original recordings of songs that the bands of "the British Invasion" happily covered (including the Fab Four). And who could blame them?

The Temptations, the Four Tops, Mary Wells, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, Martha and The Vandellas, Marvelettes and of course the 12-year old genius "Little" Stevie Wonder + many more ...

Oh, and also anyone on youtube playing on a Fender Champion 600 or Peavey Delta Blues. One guy even played into an old tube radio, sounded nice.

"Brothers In Arms" - Dire Straits.

Always listening to the Black Crowes. New stuff....The Kings of Leon. I have all four of their cds. The first two have a rawer punk edge to them. Then the third one is a little more polished and the songs are more arranged in the sense of more controlled, I guess. The fourth one, the one that's more polished and mature is the one that's opened the door to the mainstream here in Canada and the USA. Funny, how a band from Tennessee is more poplular in the UK then their own country, the USA. They are so amazing and they have a different sound. The one thing I hate is when the radio stations only play the one song that's the single. I mean every song on their last CD has single written all over it. It is truly a great, great CD. They're getting better known over on this side of the pond but it's sad that Canada and their own country just aren't getting it.
I'm also diggin' the Black Keys. They are way cool.

"An Evening Long Ago" - The Stanley Brothers, Columbia/DMZ/Legacy 2004.

In March 1956, Ralph and Carter were captured at a small radio station, WCYB, in Bristol, VA. Backed at times by fiddler Ralph Mayo and mandolinist Curly Lambert, the Stanleys performed 20 songs in one take each - a perfect snapshot.
A little rough here and there, but that's just part of the charm.

In that era, the Stanley Bros. and their five-piece Clinch Mountain Boys along with Bill Monroe's various bands and the Louvin Bros, were in a class all by themselves in bluegrass.

Wow, that's a bunch of replies, I guess it's time I participated.

My current obssession over the last couple of days has been Rodney Crowell's The Houston Kid. Such a great storyteller with a pure, dry voice, and I love the production on this record. It's mostly been a record I've enjoyed for my own entertainment, although I've been toying around with in my head an arrangement of "U Don't Know How Much I Hate U". What a great song with killer textures.

I'm afraid the other record in current rotation over the last few days is a benchmark staple that I'm revisiting for the gazillionth time - Miles Davis' Kind of Blue. I'm doing some transcribing on "Freddie the Freeloader", so I've been listening to this one off and on quite a bit.
