valvestate August 14th, 2012, 11:48 PM I decided to remove the super fugly graphics of my Joyo Ultimate Drive. With the help of my lil daughter, this is what we came up
I used some fairly light sand paper here
http://i48.tinypic.com/5pjs0.jpg
Paint was just something that was laying around from my kid's previous birthday decoration. This was the tricky part since it's not intended for metal surfaces!
http://i50.tinypic.com/2pzxyt1.jpg
I just let my kid enjoy painting it. It was really great!

Tadaaa... the finish product! It was ll my kid's hardwork, idea and stickers! I just did the electronics... of course.
http://i49.tinypic.com/pabzr.jpg
It does sparkle when I use it live on stage. Amazing indeed.

Silly face
http://i45.tinypic.com/2igy8ty.jpg
and of course... the obligatory pedal board pic in which I also made myself from Ikea Gorm.

This was really a fun/ bonding project with my kid!!
bigmuff113 August 14th, 2012, 11:54 PM Thought about getting one, but the graphics suck lol. What kind of sandpaper?
Big John Studd August 15th, 2012, 12:19 AM She did a great job...looks nice!
valvestate August 15th, 2012, 12:20 AM Thought about getting one, but the graphics suck lol. What kind of sandpaper?
Just remove the graphics and you're all set... nobody will know that it's just a cheap pedal
I don't have the actual type but I remember that I used a fairly smooth sandpaper at first but it's taking me longer than usual to remove the black paint so I purchased a rougher sand paper.
Satchmo August 15th, 2012, 12:44 AM Looks great!
You're blessed to have such a lovely and talented helper.
fenderguy72 August 15th, 2012, 12:46 AM That was such a great idea to let your kid paint it. I just might consider doin the same. You might set a trend my friend.
soulman969 August 15th, 2012, 12:49 AM Your daughter's a doll but I don't think I could do mine in pink. It's not that I question my masculinity or that I'm insecure about it........I just hate pink is all.
czech-one-2 August 15th, 2012, 02:44 AM That was such a great idea to let your kid paint it. I just might consider doin the same. You might set a trend my friend.
+2! But I'm afraid my daughter would slap a big hello kitty logo on it...
My 'Gorm' is on its 3rd year and still going strong.
valvestate August 15th, 2012, 05:27 AM Looks great!

Wow. Thanks so much.

Yeah! Now, I consider it as a boutique, limited edition OD pedal!
Your daughter's a doll but I don't think I could do mine in pink. It's not that I question my masculinity or that I'm insecure about it........I just hate pink is all.
HAHHA. Yeah, not for everyone I suppose... I like my pink DE7, it's fun to see on my board. In this case, it just so happened as well that I don't have any more available paint other than the sparkly glitters we have. It's all right. If I purchase the Joyo Vintage Drive, I might re-paint it with sparkly green or maybe violet.

I just think it's great that you got her involved and don't think she won't remember it when she grows up either. I have four grown daughters and they always bring up things they remember that were special to them that I've long since forgotten.
The Vintage Drive isn't so bad but that yellow trem pedal is a little loud for my tastes. I just ordered one that was advertised in a gold color and I'm hoping that's what it will be when it arrives later today. If not I'll ship if to you and your daughter can do a custom paint job on that one too.
smoss469 August 15th, 2012, 05:47 AM Nothing says badass like a sparkly pink and heart covered box! Looks great!
MrTwang August 15th, 2012, 05:54 AM She did a great job. Did she do that Strat in the background to the third picture too?
garytelecastor August 15th, 2012, 06:01 AM That little girl is just a great looking kid.
You can tell she is so proud of the art work
she did, and justifiable cause.
Again, nice job on the pedal but in this case
your daughter is the star of this thread.
Little girls so love their daddy.
You're a good dad Valvestate.
It makes no difference what kind of pedal
you use with a girl like that. I would venture
that she is your biggest fan.
Nice post, thanks.
11 Gauge August 15th, 2012, 08:50 AM What kind of sandpaper?
From the pics, it looks like around 400 grit to me. You could get the premium stuff that doesn't load up as fast, but even the cheap stuff would probably be okay (for leveling wood or removing rust).
the graphics suck lol.
You don't have to refinish the whole thing - you could just refinish the box top where the graphics are. If it is something that bonds well to existing finishes, you may not need to sand at all.
I just put some hammertone paint on the top of my High Gain Distortion, and all it took was masking around the top edge of the box. If the corners/edges look a little rough, you can actually usually just use something to LIGHTLY scrape to make them clean.
My HGD (knobs were put back to stock since this pic as I'm not a big fan of the Davies-type knobs):
Pants August 15th, 2012, 09:53 AM That's awesome! That's by far the most hardcore looking pedal I've ever seen. Very cool stuff.
Leep Dog August 15th, 2012, 10:01 AM I've been thinking of letting my girlfriend paint my Ultimate Drive since I hate its graphics too but maybe I should have my daughter do it instead. Very cool idea man.
valvestate August 15th, 2012, 11:27 AM I just think it's great that you got her involved
Yeah.. As much as possible, i want to get involve with my daughter... I know there will be a time that she will have her own freewill and do her own things... So m cherishing even lil moments with her.
....I'll ship if to you and your daughter can do a custom paint job on that one too.
 sure man. It will be awesome.
She did a great job. Did she do that Strat in the background to the third picture too?
Hey MrTwang! Thanks! Yes, glad you noticed. It's her Squire Red guitar which i bought 2 months ago... She customized it a few days back with her girly stickers!! well.. I didnnt mind at all.. It is now a custom shop!

Wow. Thanks.. There's a lot of love in this thread. I appreciate it.:razz:

thanks man... It is very hardcore, rocker type pedal looking pedal. You cannot have this kind of pedal if you are not a true glam rocker.
I've been thinking of letting my girlfriend paint my Ultimate Drive since I hate its graphics too but maybe I should have my daughter do it instead. Very cool idea man.
Oh yeah... Wifey also helped with some missing spots of paint. like i said, this a cool mini project for the whole family.
I encourage everyone to sand off whataver cheap pedals you have there and paint it whatever you like!

Well that Joyo Trem just got here and it's lemon yellow, not gold like the photo. Got anymore of that pink sparkle left to share. Hahaha

 I still have a lot left!!
just sand it off! make it chrome-shiny look with those silver knobs as well. That was my back -up plan if the sparkly pink paint didn't stick on the metal.
JoeNeri August 15th, 2012, 07:57 PM Nothing says badass like a sparkly pink and heart covered box! Looks great!
Hey valvestate, your first name wouldn't be Sue, would it?
Dr. Pants August 16th, 2012, 12:33 AM Super cool. And nothing delights like the sight
of a happy little girl. What a cutie! And now
whenever you're at a gig and having a rough
night, you can look at your pedal board and be reminded
of her. I know the thought of my daughter always
cheers me up.
Now, I consider it as a boutique, limited edition OD pedal!
Reality is what you can get away with, as someone once wrote.
And if the boutique guys can do it, why not Valvestate?
And now I know the fate of the scorpion on my Joyo
compressor. I *REALLY* hate that scorpion.
soulman969 August 16th, 2012, 12:54 AM  I still have a lot left!!

Well you're right. It doesn't look like it would take an act of congress to remove the old stuff. I didn't examine it all the closely but it may even be a powder coating rather than paint.
For now it's the only yellow pedal on my board so it looks like I've color coded my effects and it does stand out in dim light. So mistaking the Trem for the UD won't ever happen which is probably good since they sit next to one another.
I'll probably get used to it but if one of my daughters was still the same age as yours I think I'd show her those pics you posted and say "let's paint Dad's pedal like she did". One day they're all grown up and you realize just how much those memories count.
You're a great Dad valvestate.
ludashoeless August 16th, 2012, 01:06 AM I encourage everyone to sand off whataver cheap pedals you have there and paint it whatever you like!
Hmmm... I have a Klon centaur laying around...
Lol jk. And no I don't have a Klon lol

aaawwww...........:cry: yeah, I hear you bro. Thanks for the kind words. Can't imagine that she's only 4 yrs old now and tomorrow, she'll be 18!!

yeah, same sentiments with Dr. Pants... I don't want to imagine my kid growing up!! Me and my wife's too attached with her.......
but... THANK YOU VERY MUCH Soulman!

Well, veering way off topic -
My daughter will be five in November, and it blows
my mind how the last 4 3/4 years have blown by
in a few months.
I'd clear coat that pedal...
czech-one-2 August 16th, 2012, 12:36 PM I'd clear coat that pedal...
^ This! Preserve that thing so it looks that good when shes 18 [which wont be long now!]
E5RSY August 16th, 2012, 01:21 PM I couldn't help noticing the newspaper in your picture...
...they make kids underwear out of bamboo in Singapore??? Wow. Never knew.
eddie knuckles August 16th, 2012, 02:08 PM Chuck Norris says - "Only real men can play with sparkly pink pedals...."
Very cute father/daughter story as well.
Thank you for that.
guitarlovers September 13th, 2012, 09:47 AM So great job ! Your daughter will be a great designer .
