timcrawlin August 14th, 2012, 02:12 AM My ole ladies step-mom has had this guitar since she was a little girl and it's just been sitting in her closet for like the last 30 years or so.I was asking her about it and told her I'd clean it up for her and put new strings on it.She told me to just take it,but just don't get rid of it.Don't know much about it.It's made in the U.S.A. and has really old vintage Kluson Deluxe tuners on it.So just like any guitar I get as soon as it gets home it gets dissected to see what it's made of.Was also wondering about the pickup. Was wondering if it's something like a p90.Would love to put one in it and a TOM bridge, but leave the stock tail piece on it or some sort of vintage style tremolo. Here's a few pics..So tell me what you think about it,and some info would be nice also. Can't find anything with a date on it.. THANKS IN ADVANCE

I agree.
SamClemons August 14th, 2012, 06:30 PM I would put some strings on it and fire it up.
shaffera2 August 14th, 2012, 09:18 PM I have a hollow body Custom Kraft Super Zapp that plays pretty well. It's a fun guitar, but I've never quite bonded with the way it feels in my hands. It definitely has a unique sound though - let us know what you think once you plug it in.
timcrawlin August 14th, 2012, 11:00 PM It's not gonna be sold.I really like the way it plays, but not for sure about the sound.Wish I could find a pickup the same size so it could easily be turned back to stock.I did put a tune-o-matic bridge on it only because it just slid right on and the stock bridge can be put right back on in minutes. It does sound better with the bridge and intonation can be adjusted on the fly.Might have another pickguard made and get a top mount pick up like this one so the guitar isn't altered in anyway from it's stock form.

If you do this, keep this in mind, those NYIIs are pretty tall, even the neck pickup (which is plenty hot) is 1/2" high. You would need to cut the hole in your new pickguard to fit the entire pickup then use wooden shims beneath it to set the height. Then it would work fine. I have built with them before.
As long as your making a new pickguard, it would be far easier to use the mini-humbuckers LINK (http://www.guitarfetish.com/Gibson-P90-Soapbar-Style-Mini-Humbuckers_c_237.html), throw the soapbar mounting ring in a drawer, and just mount it directly to the pickguard like a strat . They sound very good and would swapping back to stock a quick-change

The stock pickup is like that also. That's way I was thinking going with one of those.Got another project that's first in line.I'm building my first git from scratch. Well the body atleast. Came up with my own body shape. It's like a Paul with a Jag lower horn. Here's a couple pics. One is of the neck pic of the Custom Kraft and the other is of the body I made. All together the wood for the body was like $12 after tax. It's my first scratch build ever.

I see that now . Keep in mind if you use the NYII that the shell is a loose fit around the coil. You will need a flat shim under the pup to keep the coil from falling out. If you measure carefully the height of the block you need under the pup in the body cavity, it can be the shim. I mounted mine as well on little pads I cut the exact size of the pup from a mouse pad.
FWIW these pups are a little hot so you might want to stick with the neck pup. The string spacing will probably be a little wide but the pole pieces are large and will cover it. FYI, the neck pup is as hot as the bridge in my old LP Jr, so be prepared

Nice project, did you post it on the Home Depot? If not, do so where everyone can enjoy it
