Can anyone compare Robs Lion pickup set to a stock AmStd (prior to 2012) tele set?
I like the openness of the AmStd stock neck (edited).
Any clips?
Does it still twang okay?
I have two great pickups I am using but they are from different manufacturers and would like to get a set that is matched and closer to more traditional (nothing overly hot or dark)... and sounds for lack of description bell like and pretty.
I do everything style wise from chordal jazz (ala Ted Greene) to hard rock (Gary Moore) to country (Brent Mason)... so... yes... a pretty extreme range of tones. Just trying to find some good middle ground fendery pickups... pretty much a one guitar guy player here.

I just replaced my stock '11 60th (glorified AS) bridge pup with Rob's Lion. There's a couple threads in this forum where I gave some detailed observations.
In short, the '11 stock AS bridge pup is OK. Compared to the Lion, however, it pales significantly. The stock '11 AS neck pup, on the other hand is very nice (IMHO).
The Lion in the bridge, along with the stock neck pup makes a great tone. The Lion alone, is great. And, yes - it still twangs. It twangs quite nicely, too.

I don't know where to buy a stock pre 2012 amstd neck pickup so was hoping the Lion would be about identical.

I'm sure that you can find a pre '12 AS neck pup on eBay. You might even be able to get one directly from fender.
If you feel that a "matched set" is required, you could always look at using Rob's pups in both the neck and the bridge.
However, if you really like the stock AS bridge pup, then I'm not really sure what to say about putting something else in the neck. The bridge pup is the weak link, IMHO.

Oops... my bad... edited to say I like the openness of the stock 'neck' pickup (not bridge).

Oh, that makes sense now :)
Many of us really do like the stock
AS neck pup. And some of us really do NOT like the stock bridge pup.
So, my point is, the Lion makes a great companion to the stock bridge pup. You'll find that you'll need to spend a little time rebalancing them. But, it's not difficult to blend in a great voice for position 2.

Rob as a tried before you by. To be honest whit you i have a cavalier lion bridge in my esquiere it's in my opinion one of the best pup i ever heard. The tone you can get whit that pup is just amazing, lots of mid range and twang. I don't have experience whit the neck version but in my opinion if the guy could wind a bridge pup like that i'm pretty sure the neck is probebly as good. Cocoboudin
